BUIES CREEK, N.C. - Campbell's swim team competes in the Coastal
Collegiate Swimming Association (CCSA) Championships from Feb.
17-19 this week in Athens, Ga. The Camels will be looking to
improve on the team's sixth place finish from a season ago. The CU
program continues to improve yearly and placed seventh during both
the 2008 and 2009 season. The day will have daily trials at 10 a.m.
and nightly final of events starting at 6 p.m.
The Camels have had a strong 2010-11 season and are looking to
finish it on a positive note and improve on last year's finish.
Leading the Camels at the championships will be freshman Cheriesse
Campbell. Campbell leads CU and has the team's top event times
in the 200 free (1:54.31), 500 free (5:03.85), 800 free (9:32.86),
1,000 free (10:32.32), 1,650 free (17:27.96) and 100 fly (58.23).
She has also set school records in all those events. Campbell leads
the team with 27 top-three finishes. She comes into the week's
action ranking third in the 1,650 free, fifth in the 1,000 free,
sixth in the 500 free, seventh in the 200 free and 100 butterfly in
the conference. Campbell was named the CCSA's Swimmer of the Week
on Feb. 9.
Fellow freshman Kylie
Warne has also had a great rookie campaign with a pair of CCSA
Swimmer of the Week honors (Nov. 10 and Feb.2). Warne is second on
the team with 22 top-three finishes. Warne is ranked among the
conference leaders in the 500 yard (10th), 1,000 free (11th), 200
butterfly (11th) and 200 IM (16th).
Senior Ashlyn
Stumpf, who has the team's top times in the 50 free (24.50) and
the 100 free (53.97), will also be in competition for Campbell for
the final time. Stumpf is ranked seventh in the CCSA in the 50
free.
Junior Emily
Michael leads the team and is ranked 14th in the league in the
100 breast (1:07.65). Freshman Kaitlyn
Burnette has been the team's top performer in the 50 back, 100
back and 200 back. She ranks 12th in the league in the event
(2:11.26)
The last Campbell swimmer to achieve all-conference status was
Heidi Shallow in 2008 when she won the 200 breaststroke. In order
to be all-conference a Campbell swimmer will need to finish in the
top three of an individual event at the championships.
