KIAWAH ISLAND, S.C. - Sarah Bejgrowicz won the individual
tournament championship and Campbell finished second in the team
standings following Tuesday's final round of the Edwin Watts/Kiawah
Island Classic.
A senior from Lancaster, Pa., Bejgrowicz claimed her second career
collegiate tournament crown by shooting even-par 216 (69-71-76) to
top the 172-player field. Atlantic Coast Conference member Miami
(296-297-295-888) earned team honors, nine strokes ahead of
Campbell (299-301-296-897) in the 33-school event.
The top 18 teams following 36 holes competed for the tournament
championship at the par-72, 5907-yard Oak Point Golf Course
layout. The remaining 15 played for the flight championship
Tuesday at par-72, 6001-yard Cougar Point.
"The golf course played hard, the wind was blowing and the greens
were quick," said 20th-year Campbell head coach John Crooks of his
team that collected its third-consecutive top-4 placement. "But
our ladies hung in there and made us proud. We seem to be getting
better and better. Today, Kaylin Yost and Sandy Angulo had our low
round, and our team was solid all the way around."
Bejgrowicz had 8 birdies over the 54-hole event and posted her
third-straight top-10 individual finish. She now has 11 collegiate
top-10 performances, including a victory in the 2009 Jacksonville
Spring Invitational.
"I was able to focus on hitting shots and more a feel player than
worried about being too technical," said Bejgrowicz, who eclipsed
her season-low round on Sunday with a 3-under-par 69. "The wind
was consistently strong, 15-to-25 miles per hour with gusts to 30.
That made you really test your patience and trust your
fundamentals."
Mitsuki Katahira of Daytona State (75-68-73-216) claimed the flight
individual championship. Betsy Birchall of William & Mary
(69-74-74-217) finished third, one stroke ahead of Western
Carolina's Blaire Minter (71-70-77-218). Kristin Hill of Akron
(73-75-71-219) and Maria Ronderos of Miami (76-72-71-219) tied for
5th.
"Sarah has always been a solid, consistent player," said Crooks,
whose team has finished 4th, 3rd and 2nd in its last three
outings. "But over the past week, we made a small change in her
grip and a small change in her putting stroke and both clicked. As
a result, her confidence has just gotten stronger and she got to
the point where she didn't have to think about playing golf. She
just played, and that's when you have your best results."
Florida International (298-303-300-901) finished third in the team
standings, two strokes ahead of Western Carolina
(297-304-302-903). Host College of Charleston (305-299-306-910),
Nebraska (307-302-301-910) and Akron (305-303-302-910) tied for
5th.
Campbell freshman Kaylin Yost (77-76-73-226) matched her collegiate
low round on Tuesday and posted her best individual finish (tie for
21st) in five outings this year.
Senior Sandra Angulo tied for 27th place (78-76-73-227), while
junior Michelle Koh (75-78-75-228) tied for 33rd. Sophomore Teresa
Urquizu finished 156th (91-80-87-258).
Playing as individuals, Campbell freshmen Ali Prazak (76-77-78-231)
and Maria Jose Benavides (78-84-81-243) tied for 46th and 110th,
respectively.
Campbell continues its schedule Mar. 6-8 with the Barefoot at the
Beach tournament in Myrtle Beach, S.C.
