GREENVILLE, N.C. - The Campbell softball team (7-4) scored two in
the first inning and survived a late Lehigh rally (0-1) to come
away with a close to 2-1 win in the team's first game of the Pirate
Clash on Friday, Feb. 25.
Sophomore Brittany Arnn (3-1) started for the Camels and struck out
a career-high eight Mountain Hawk while allowing just three hits.
Senior Katie Woodcock came in relief and picked up her fourth save
of the season with two innings out of the bullpen. The save was the
school-record 11th of her career. The loss went to Lehigh's Ashley
Quigley, who allowed just two runs in six innings of work.
The Camels scored first. Senior Amanda Miller lead off the game
with a single up the middle. She then stole second and scored on
sophomore Sarah Forgacs' triple to the gap in left center. Junior
Christina Melton then walked. Fellow junior Taylor McGee followed
with a bounding ground ball past the shortstop to drive in Forgacs
from third with what would be the eventual game-winning run.
CU had a chance to extend the lead and loaded the bases with
one-out in the fifth inning, but the next two Campbell players were
retired in order on a strikeout and ground out to keep the score at
2-0.
The Mountain Hawks cut the deficit in half with a run in the sixth.
Audra Wood struck out but reached on a wild pitch. Alex Cueva then
reached on an infield single. A single to right by Julie Fernandez
loaded the bases. Liz Lucas drove in the first run with a sacrifice
fly to right to score Wood. Cueva was thrown out on the ball on the
throw from senior left fielder Lizzie Goldbach to freshman third
baseman Shaela Churchill.
The Camels continue play in the Pirate Clash and take on Fairfield
at 2 p.m. this afternoon at ECU Softball Stadium
