GREENVILLE, N.C. - The Campbell softball team (8-5) reached double
figures in runs for the third time this season in an 11-3 win over
Lehigh (0-2) on Saturday, Feb. 26 on the second day of the Pirate
Clash at ECU Softball Stadium. The Camels have scored 11 runs in
all three of their run-shortened games.
Junior Christina
Melton (2-0) picked up the win for Campbell with four innings
worked and two strikeouts. Freshman Olivia
Scarborough pitched the final inning for Campbell. The loss
went to Rebecca Bliss, who surrendered seven runs in two plus
innings.
Four different Campbell players recorded multiple RBIs in the game
led by senior Lizzie
Goldbach's three. Fellow seniors Amanda
Miller and Keeli
Michael plus sophomore Sarah
Forgacs also had a pair of runs drive in.
The Camels scored first with two runs in the second inning. Junior
Taylor
McGee started the frame with a walk. She scored all the way
from first on Goldbach's double. Michael then punched a double to
left center to score Goldbach with the second run.
The Mountain Hawks cut the deficit in half with a two-out run in
the bottom of the frame. Jessica Long started the rally with a walk
and came all the way around the bases with the first run on Tenley
Halaquist's RBI double.
The CU offense exploded for five runs in the third inning. Miller
started the frame with a lead-off walk, moved to second on an
illegal pitch, took third on a wild pitch and then scored on
Forgacs' single to center. Melton and McGee then walked to load the
bases. Goldbach followed with a double to center to score Forgacs
and Melton. Michael then drove in McGee and senior Katie
Hinton's ground out scored Goldbach.
Lehigh scored two in the third. Audra Wood walked to start the
inning. Alex Cueva moved Wood to third with a double. Julie
Fernandez then singled through the left side to plate Wood from
third. Cueva came to score the second run of inning on a wild
pitch.
Campbell's Melton got out of a one-out first and second situation
in the fourth inning when she induced pinch hitter Kristen Mitchell
to hit into a double play from senior third baseman Katie
Woodcock to senior first baseman Lauren
Stephan.
The Camels added the final four to the lead in the fifth inning.
Hinton picked up a one-out triple. Senior Melissa
Elks then walked and stole second. Miller followed with a
triple to left to score Hinton and Elks. Miller came around to
score the next run on Forgacs' RBI double. Melton then singled in
Forgacs' with the team's 11th run.
The Camels finish play in the Pirate Clash and have a pair of games
on Sunday, Feb. 27. CU will take on Towson at 1 p.m. and East
Carolina at 3 p.m.
