GREENVILLE, N.C. - The Campbell softball team (8-6) was limited to
just three hits and two walks in a 2-0 loss to Towson (6-4) in the
team's first game of the third day of the Pirate Clash at ECU
Softball Stadium. Both of the runs scored for the Tigers came in
the third inning and were unearned because of three CU errors.
Senior Katie Woodcock (1-1) pitched well in defeat for Campbell
with seven innings worked and four strikeouts. The start in the
circle was the second of the season and in the career of Woodcock
and her first career complete game. Katie Lingami (4-1) earned the
win for the Tigers with seven innings worked and six
strikeouts.
Towson scored both runs in the game in third inning. Rachel Miller
reached on a fielding error from the Campbell first baseman and
took second on the CU throwing error from the right fielder. She
came in to score the first Tiger unearned run on Andrea Stevenson's
triple. The second run of the game came in as the CU second baseman
bobbled a ball hit by Courtney Wittner to score Rachael Miller from
third with the second unearned run of the frame.
Campbell threatened with two outs in the fourth inning when junior
Taylor
McGee singled and senior Lizzie
Goldbach walked. The next CU batter was retired on a strikeout
to keep the margin at 2-0.
The Camels threatened in the sixth inning. Senior Amanda
Miller led off the frame and reached on a fielding error. She
moved to second as sophomore Sarah
Forgacs singled to center. A wild pitched moved both runners up
a base, but the next three Campbell batters were retired in order
with two going down on swinging strikeouts to keep the score at
2-0.
The CU seventh was exciting as senior Keeli
Michael lead off the inning with a walk. A fielder's choice
eliminated Michael at second, but allowed senior Katie
Hinton to reach. Senior Lauren
Stephan then hit a deep fly ball to the base of the wall that
missed clearing the wall and tying the game by less than three
feet. The final Campbell batter struckout to allow Towson to take
the game 2-0.
The Camels finish play in the Pirate Clash with a 4 p.m. against
the host institution, East Carolina, this afternoon.
