Spry led five Lady Camels in double figures with a career-best
22 points as Campbell defeated Mercer 77-64 Saturday afternoon
inside the University Center.
The Lady Camels move to 10-12 overall and 9-4 in A-Sun action,
clinching a spot in March's conference tournament. Mercer falls to
1-21 with the loss, and 1-12 in league games. The Bears are 0-8 at
home this season. Campbell, meanwhile, is 9-2 in 2011.
Spry hit 7-of-11 attempts from the floor that included four treys,
while junior guard Amanda
O'Neill poured in a career-high 19 points, adding nine
rebounds, five assists and a pair of steals.
Lauren
Yesh added 12 points, including 10 in the second half, with
nine rebounds and three steals. The senior forward also played in
her 112th career game, moving into sole possession of
sixth place on the all-time appearances list, passing Sara Moore
(111, 1997-01).
Sophomore guard Tonisha
Baker chipped in 11 points, seven rebounds and four assists,
while sophomore forward Jazmine
Cooper tallied 10 points and four rebounds.
Freshman guard Briana Williams led Mercer with 35 points on
13-of-26 shooting, the most given up by CU to an individual this
season. Freshman forward Brittnee Hazel added 13 points and four
rebounds in the loss, while sophomore post Sharmesia Smith tallied
six points and 11 rebounds.
Leading 43-37 in the second frame, Yesh led a 12-2 Campbell run
with six points, giving CU a 16-point advantage with 11:06 to
play.
The Campbell lead swelled to 63-44 on a Cooper basket with 7:27 on
the clock, the Lady Camels' largest lead of the contest.
Williams then fueled a Bears' comeback attempt, scoring 12 in a
15-5 MU spurt, trimming the Campbell lead to 68-59 with 2:27 to
play.
After Williams cut the lead to seven, 71-64, on a three with 1:21
remaining, the Lady Camels posted the game's final six, taking the
77-64 win.
The Lady Camels led by as many as nine in the first half, after a
five point Campbell swing courtesy a Spry three and a Baker lay-in.
16 Mercer turnovers converted into 13 points for CU in the opening
half. Spry led Campbell to a 34-28 at halftime with 12 points.
The Lady Camels will wrap up its road swing Monday at Kennesaw
State. Tip-off is slated for 5 p.m. inside the KSU Convocation
Center.
