ST.LOUIS, Mo. - Campbell's football program continued to take in
awards nearly three months after the completion of the 2010 season
and had six players named to the 18th annual Academic All-Pioneer
Football League teams, the conference office announced this
afternoon.
Redshirt senior tight end Mike
Stryffeler and redshirt junior offensive lineman Andy
Johnson, who were both named to the CoSIDA Academic
All-District 3 Football University First Team earlier this season,
headlined the selections for Campbell and were both First Team
Academic All-PFL selections. Stryffeler was an offensive first team
selection for the second time in his career. He is one of seven
players in the PFL to be a repeat first teamer. The Sanford, N.C.
native is an exercise and sports science major with a 3.79
cumulative grade-point average (GPA). He also has been named to the
PFL's Academic Honor Roll for each of the last two seasons and was
named to the league's All-PFL First Team as a tight end for the
second time this past fall. Johnson selection to the first team was
the first of his career. He is a government/pre-law major with a
GPA of 3.60. The Smithfield, N.C. native has been named to the
PFL's Academic Honor Roll in each of the last two seasons.
Campbell's football team was also able to place four on the second
team. Redshirt senior quarterback Daniel
Polk led the effort for Campbell and was selected for the
second time in his career. Polk, a psychology major, sports a 3.34
GPA and has also been selected to the league's academic honor roll
in each of the last two seasons.
Joining Polk on the offensive list is redshirt senior tight end Josh
Owens. Owens, who was a first-time selection, carries 3.58 GPA
as a sport management major and has also been named to the league's
academic honor roll in each of the last two seasons.
Redshirt senior defensive lineman Charles
Fiore spearheaded the defense for Campbell with his third
career selection to an Academic All-PFL team. Fiore earned first
team honors in each of the prior two seasons and twice he has been
a PFL Academic Honor Roll choice. The Kernersville, N.C. native is
graduate student in Campbell's religion program and carries a 3.20
cumulative GPA. Joining Fiore on the defensive list for Campbell is
sophomore safety Paul Pizzuti. Pizzuti, a Florence, S.C. native,
has a 3.50 GPA as a BBA Trust Management major. He was named to
the PFL's Academic Honor Roll as a freshman.
Dayton had the most selections with 11. Drake followed with eight.
Davidson and Butler were next with seven each. Marist had five.
Campbell and Valparaiso each had four. San Diego and Morehead State
each had one each.
The Pioneer Football League athletic directors established the
Academic All-PFL squads in 1993 as a way to recognize the league's
outstanding student-athletes. To be nominated, the student-athlete
must be a starter or important reserve with at least a 3.0
cumulative grade-point average (on a 4.0 scale) for his career. No
athlete is eligible until he has reached sophomore athletic and
academic standing at his institution.
Campbell will kick off the spring practice schedule on Feb. 28 with
3:30 practice in shorts on the grass practice field. More details
about all 15 dates will be available at a later time.
