TEMPE, Ariz. - Despite hitting a pair of home runs, the Campbell
softball team (8-12) lost the team's seventh consecutive game in
the team's second game of the day at the Diamond Devil Invitational
by a 13-4 score to No. 9/7 Arizona State (20-1) at Farrington
Stadium. The loss to the Sun Devils was the second for Campbell
against a ranked team this season with CU also falling to No. 1
Georgia last weekend. The home runs ended a homerless drought of 10
games for the Camels.
Senior Lauren
Stephan (2-5) took the loss for Campbell and allowed eight runs
(seven earned) on 12 hits in three innings. Hilary Bach (5-0)
allowed all four runs in five innings with six hits allowed and two
strikeouts.
Stephan also drove in a pair of runs for Campbell with a home run.
Junior Taylor
McGee also hit a solo home run for CU.
ASU scored first with three in the first inning. Katelyn Boyd
doubled to lead off the inning. She took third on a pass ball and
scored on Lesley Rogers' single off the wall in right. Sam Parlich
then singled to left and took second on the left fielder's bobble.
Rogers scored the second run on Annie Lockwood's single. Parlich
scored herself on Alix Johnson's single.
The Camels drew a run closer in the second inning on McGee's solo
home run. The home run was the 21st of her career.
CU threatened in the third inning. Senior Melissa
Elks punished a single high off the way in right field and
moved to second on senior Keeli
Michael's one-out infield single. The next two Camels were
retired in order though to keep the score at 3-1.
The Sun Devils capitalized on the change in momentum and scored
five runs in the third frame. Lacy Goodman reached on a fielder's
choice. Talor Haro then walked and both came in to score on Boyd's
home run. The hit was her third of the game. Rogers and Sam Parlich
then both singled and came home on Lockwood's single to center.
The Camels offense put a two-spot up in the fourth inning. Freshman
Raven
Lee began the CU rally with a single up the middle. Senior Katie
Woodcock was inserted to run for Lee and scored on Stephan's
home run to right center.
ASU added five more to the lead in the fourth inning. Four of the
five runs were unearned. The big hit of the frame with a two-run
single from Alix Johnson.
The Camels attempted to rally in the fifth inning. Elks led off
with a walk. Senior Katie Hinton then singled through the left
side. Fellow senior Lizzie
Goldbach drove in Elks with a ground out to make the final
score 13-4.
The Camels will next play against Creighton on Friday, March 11 at
5:30 p.m. MST.
