TEMPE, Ariz. - Campbell's softball team (9-12) homered twice for
the second consecutive game in an exciting 7-6 victory over
Creighton (8-12) on the second day of the Diamond Devil. The Camels
win snapped a seven-game losing streak. The game saw the tying run
standing on third base with one out in the bottom of the seventh
inning before Campbell reliever Brittany
Arnn recorded a ground out and strikeout to preserve the
victory. The Camels survived a three home run game from Creighton's
Amy Baker
Senior Katie
Woodcock (2-1) earned the win for Campbell with 3.1 innings in
relief. She allowed two runs with four strikeouts. Arnn came in to
earn a tense save with 2/3 of an inning worked and a strikeout. The
save was her first of the season. The loss went to Creighton's
Sammy Snygg, who allowed four runs, in her one inning. Freshman Olivia
Scarborough started for Campbell and allowed four runs in three
innings.
The CU offense exploded for four runs and two home runs in the
first inning. The inning started as senior Amanda
Miller reached on a two-out fielding error from the Creighton
third baseman. Senior Lizzie
Goldbach was then hit by a pitch. Junior Taylor
McGee then hit her third home run of the season to give CU the
early 3-0 lead. Freshman Raven
Lee followed with her third home run of the season to give the
Camels a 4-0 advantage.
The Bluejays chipped away at the lead in the first. Baker
started the rally with her first home run of the game. Creighton
added to the lead on Danai Martin's RBI single to score Brittnie
Kreiser. McKenzie Michael was thrown out at the plate trying to
score on play on
The Camels scored three runs in the third inning. Senior Katie
Hinton started the rally with a single to left. Miller and
Goldbach then walked. After a strike out, Lee hit into a fielder's
choice in which she also reached on the throw home to score Hinton.
Sophomore Sarah
Forgacs followed with a double to plate Miller and Goldbach and
give Campbell a 7-2 lead.
Baker again brought the Bluejays back the next inning with a
two-run home run to cut the margin to 7-4.
Woodcock pitched out of a two-out bases loaded situation and
induced Liz McKewon to ground out to end the frame and keep the
score at 7-4 through six innings.
Baker again homered in the seventh. The blast was third of the
game and fifth of the day. Brittnie Kreiser and McKenzie Michael
then singled back to back to put the tying runs on base. After a
sacrifice to move them both over, Arnn was inserted in the game to
pitch for Woodcock. Homan then chopped an infield single to the
shortstop to score pinch runner Emily Perry. Arnn then induced a
ground out that saw hard charging Campbell first baseman Sarah
Ling tag the batter right out of the box to keep the tying run
at third. Arnn then struck out the final batter to preserve the
victory.
The Camels will next play against Howard on Saturday, March 12
at 5:30 p.m. MST.
