GREENVILLE, N.C.-Ellis
Lowe clubbed three hits to become Campbell's all-time leader in
the category, as Campbell fell 7-4 at East Carolina Tuesday night
at Clark-LeClair Stadium.
Lowe, a senior infielder, came into Tuesday's contest second
all-time with 267 career hits, two behind Kent Cox's (1993-96)
school record, and notched three base hits to claim the program
crown. The San Diego, Calif. native is also on the verge of setting
multiple other program records, including at-bats, runs scored,
doubles, runs batted in and total bases.
Campbell jumped out to an early lead in Tuesday's game against the
Pirates, as Alan
Denman and Tyler
Hutchinson drove in Jimmy
Brenneman and Lowe, who picked up the game's first hit, the
268th of his career with a drive up the middle.
ECU's Zach Wright, who ended the game with five RBI on a 2-for-4
night, put the Pirates on the board in the second with a RBI
double, and Mike Ussery evened the contest at 2-all with his
one-out sacrifice fly two batters later.
After the Camels went down in order in the top half of the third,
Wright struck again for the Pirates, sending the first pitch he saw
over the leftfield wall for a grand slam.
With the Pirates on top 6-2, Jake
Smith came on in relief for the Camels, sitting down 9-of-11
Pirates over the next three innings, and allowing only three hits.
In the bottom of the sixth, Campbell answered with a run when Lowe
plated Brenneman, tying the CU all-time mark.
The Camels pulled within two in the seventh when Hutchinson scored
on a Bryce
Grady sacrifice fly, 6-4.
Lowe reset the all-time Campbell record in the eighth, belting the
first pitch he saw into left, the 270th of his
career.
The Pirates added another tally in the eighth, going up 7-4 on a
John Wooten bases loaded walk.
Shawn Armstrong picked up the win for ECU, moving to 1-0 in the
early going, working 6.0 innings while giving up three earned runs
on four hits with four strikeouts. Jake Harris picked up the save
for the Pirates with 1.0 inning of work, his first of the
season.
Matt
Marksberry took the loss for Campbell, falling to 0-1 on the
season, scattering four hits with six runs, all earned, four walks
and three punch outs. Smith bridged the gap to Colin
Parker, who worked 2.0 innings with one run on two hits,
recording five walks and three strikeouts.
Lowe (3-for-4) and Hutchinson (2-for-4) both collected multi-hit
games for Campbell. Brenneman and Cameron
Nelson also picked up hits in the loss.
The Camels will be back in action this weekend, beginning Atlantic
Sun play in Kennesaw, Ga. The Owls will host CU on Friday at 6 p.m.
Saturday's doubleheader will begin at 1 p.m.
