BUIES CREEK, N.C. - Campbell's softball team (15-14) split its
doubleheader against Charleston Southern (12-17) on Tuesday, March
22 at the Eakes Athletic Complex. The Camels won the first game 2-0
but lost the second game to the Buccaneers by the same score. CU
saw the team's winning streak reach a season-high five games before
the second game loss. The win in the second game by Charleston
Southern snapped a six-game skid.
Senior Katie Woodcock (5-1) threw a complete game shutout in the
first game with five hits allowed and seven strikeouts. The shutout
was the first registered by the Camels this season. Freshman Olivia
Scarborough (0-2) took the second game loss for CU. She allowed
just two runs in throwing a career-high six innings with a career
best six strikeouts. Woodcock threw a scoreless seventh in the
second game to run her scoreless inning streak to eight on the
day.
The CU offense was limited to four hits in each game. The
difference was that senior Lauren
Stephan was able to hit two solo home runs in the first
game.
Stephan hit her first home run in the first game with two-out in
the second inning on a fly ball that carried over the right field
wall.
The game stayed scoreless until the sixth when Stephan hit her
second solo home run of the game. The home run was her third of the
season and gave CU a late insurance tally.
The loss in the first game went to Morgan Dowdy (4-11), who allowed
four hits and four walks in throwing a complete game.
The second game was a scoreless affair until the fifth inning.
Megan Lombard started the rally with a hit by pitch. A double from
Kristin Kelleher moved her to third. After the next two were
retired and Scarborough looked to be on verge of escaping the
sticky situation, Jana Matthews doubled in both runners to give the
Buccaneers a 2-0 advantage they would not relinquish.
The Camels put runners on base in six of the seven innings, but
were never able to drive them in.
CU had a runner reach third in the opening inning as senior Katie
Hinton walked, moved to second on a sacrifice bunt and took
third on a throwing error. Stephan walked and stole second to move
into scoring position, but both runners were stranded on a
strikeout.
The second inning also began promising with sophomore Sarah
Forgacs reaching on a one-out bunt single. She then stole
second to move into scoring position. The CU offense was stymied as
the final Campbell batter of the inning grounded out.
The third again started well with senior Keeli
Michael reaching on a lead-off single. After a strikeout,
Michael stole second. After a foul out for the second out, Stephan
then walked. A fly out to center ended the frame.
Kimberly Hobbs (8-6) allowed just four hits and record nine
strikeouts in the win for CSU.
The Camels host North Carolina on Wednesday, March 23, for a
doubleheader starting at 4 p.m. The day will be "Strike Out Cancer
Day" where Campbell will honor all cancer survivors including
senior Amanda
Littlejohn.
