BUIES CREEK, N.C. - On a cold and rainy day, Campbell's softball
team (16-17, 2-2 Atlantic Sun) dropped a conference doubleheader by
scores of 9-1 and 3-2 to visiting Florida Gulf Coast (19-17, 2-0
Atlantic Sun) on Saturday afternoon, March 26.
After falling in the first game by a 9-1 score, the Campbell
offense jumped out to an early 2-0 lead in the first inning on
senior Lauren
Stephan's two-run home run with senior Amanda
Miller aboard. The home run was her fourth of the week and
fifth of the season.
The 2-0 advantage held all the way until the fourth inning as CU's
Christina
Melton and FGCU's Kelci Breaux both settled down and were
matching each other zero for zero. In the fourth, Jessica Barnes
reached on a one-out single. Kayla Gable then reached on a fielding
error from the CU first baseman. On the play the Campbell right
fielder overthrew the CU third baseman, who was covering her base,
and allowed Barnes to race around the bases with the Eagles' first
run of the game.
The Eagles, aided by another Campbell miscue in the field, pushed
two across in the sixth to take the 3-2 advantage. Barnes again
started the trouble with her bunt single. She then stole second and
came in to score on a fielding error from the Campbell left fielder
off the single from Regan Knapik. Chelsea Yates was inserted to run
for Knapik and scored on Tori Williams' triple.
The Camels attempted to rally in the seventh when junior Taylor
McGee drew a one-out walk. The rally was quickly stopped as
Breaux retired the next two in order to preserve the victory.
Melton (3-3) took the loss in the second game for Campbell. She
went 6.1 innings and tied her career-high with 10 strikeouts.
Breaux (6-5) only allowed three hits and also struck out 10 with
just one walk in the win.
The Camels fell in the first game of the day by a 9-1 score. The
Eagles scored two runs in the opening inning on Emily Lanier's two
run blast with Courtney Platt aboard. Platt would pick up four hits
and three runs scored in the game for FGCU.
The Camels answered with a run in the bottom of the frame on senior
Katie
Hinton's solo blast.
The game remained 2-1 all the way until the fifth when FGCU added a
three-spot on Mariah Fernandez's home run.
The Eagles offense added the last four runs of the game in the
seventh. Fernandez again provided the big blow with a three-run
triple.
Sophomore Brittany
Arnn (4-6) started and went 4.1 innings with six strikeouts.
She allowed three runs and did not surrender a walk. Senior Katie
Woodcock, who pitched in both games, allowed six runs (five
earned) in two innings with three strikeouts. Catherine McDaniel
(8-8) allowed just six hits in throwing a complete game for
FGCU.
Freshman Raven
Lee had two hits in the first game for CU.
The Camels host Stetson on Monday, March 28, for a conference
doubleheader starting at 4 p.m.
