BUIES CREEK, N.C. - Campbell's softball team (16-17, 2-2 Atlantic
Sun Conference), who are riding a two-game skid, will look to get
back to the winning ways with six conference games this week. The
Camels start the week with a makeup doubleheader against Stetson on
Tuesday, March 29, at 2 p.m. CU will then hit the road and travels
to Nashville, Tenn. for a pair of conference doubleheaders against
Lipscomb (April 1) and Belmont (April 2). The Lipscomb double dip
is set for 5 p.m. EST, while the Belmont doubleheader is set to
start at 1 p.m. EST.
The Camels' 2-4 record last week was highlighted by a 7-4 win over
North Carolina (3/23). CU's Brittany
Arnn picked up her second career win against the Tar Heels in
the victory. Senior Amanda
Miller led the offensive attack against UNC with three RBIs.
Senior Lauren
Stephan had a strong week for Campbell with four home runs.
Stephan has now hit five home runs on the season and 19 in her CU
career. Her 19 career home runs place her eighth all-time at
Campbell in long balls. Fellow senior Katie
Woodcock picked up her fifth save of the season in the team's
win over North Carolina. In the team's 2-0 win over Charleston
Southern (3/22), Woodcock became the first Campbell pitcher to
throw a complete game shutout this season. Woodcock comes into the
week and leads the Camels with a 5-1 record, 1.92 ERA and five
saves.
Stetson (14-15) enters the week on a four-game skid after dropping
both games of the doubleheader to Dartmouth. The Hatters have yet
to play a road game this year and hasn't even left the DeLand, Fla.
area for contest. Senior Chelsey Trotto leads the team with 31
hits, 20 runs, 22 RBIs and 46 bases. Trotto also has 14 thefts on
the campaign. Freshman Chrissy Morello leads the team with 17
stolen bases and is tied for the team lead with 16 walks. Senior
Jill Semento has driven-in 19 and walked 16 times. The Hatters are
using multiple pitchers this year with freshman Meredith Owen
leading the team with 47 strikeouts and sophomore Camille Czarnecki
having team-highs of seven wins and 78.1 innings thrown. The
Hatters lead the series between the schools by a 26-22 count.
Stetson defeated Campbell twice last season in DeLand by scores of
6-0 and 2-1.
The Lady Bisons (15-11, 4-0 Atlantic Sun), who are the defending
regular season and conference tournament champions, are coming in
red-hot after sweeping four games over the weekend on the road
against conference rivals ETSU and USC Upstate. Lipscomb players,
Caroline Mason and Whitney Kiihnl, earned Atlantic Sun Player and
Pitcher of the Week recognition for their outstanding performances,
respectfully, for their outstanding performances this week. Kiihnl,
who is the reigning conference pitcher and player and pitcher of
the year, has now earned Atlantic Sun Pitcher of the Week
recognition three times this season. Kiihnl is off to an impressive
12-6 start in the circle. She has a 1.22 ERA plus 184 strikeouts in
120.1 innings thrown. Mollie Mitchell has hit five home runs and
driven in 27 this season. Five different members of the Lady Bisons
have four or more home runs this season in Mitchell (5), Breanna
Thurman (4), Mason (4), Vanessa Medina (4) and Haley Elliot (4).
Thurman also has a .347 batting average and leads the team with 25
hits, 19 runs scored and 17 walks. Lipscomb will play a pair of
home games against Western Kentucky on Tuesday before welcoming CU
into town for a weekend set. Lipscomb leads the all-time series
between the two schools by an 11-4 count including sweeping a pair
of games in Buies Creek last season.
Belmont (7-22, 0-4 Atlantic Sun) was swept by USC Upstate and ETSU
over the weekend. The Bruins are riding a six-game losing streak
heading into the week .Belmont is scheduled to take on Samford in a
mid-week doubleheader on March 31 before the team's games against
the Camels on Saturday. Belmont is led by junior first baseman
Ashley Byers. Byers is hitting .253 and has seven doubles, seven
home runs, 16 walks and 19 RBIs this season. Her seven home runs
tie her for second in the league. Sophomore transfer Becca Gift,
who is from Durham, N.C., is hitting .264 with 19 hits. Sophomore
Devon Schmidt has won six games with a 2.79 ERA and 85 strikeouts
in 100.1 innings thrown. Campbell leads the all-time series with
Belmont 14-4. The Camels swept both games from Belmont last season
and have won seven in a row from the Bruins.
Next, the Camels continue the road swing and travel to Hampton, Va.
to take on Hampton in a doubleheader on Wednesday, April 6,
starting at 2 p.m.
