Turkson
Ties Walks Record
Freshman
outfielder Joe
Turkson tied the Campbell single-game walks record against
Maryland Eastern Shore, drawing a free pass four times in game one
of a doubleheader. Turkson tied the record held by Ron Ammons, who
walked four times on two occasions (at North Carolina Wesleyan
4/16/80 and at Stetson 3/3/81), and J.C. Hendrix (vs. UNC Asheville
3/13/92).
Bullpen
Stellar vs. Northwestern
The
Campbell bullpen showed significant improvement over the weekend,
allowing only two runs, neither of which where earned, in 16.0
innings of work against Northwestern in a three game series. The
Camel relievers surrendered just three hits, walking just two, and
struck out 11, including five by sophomore Ryan
Mattes, who allowed one hit in 4 2/3 innings of relief on
Thursday night.
Logan
Self pitched 7 1/3 innings out of the pen on Saturday in the
series finale, allowing just three base runners on a hit and two
walks. The outing was Self's longest of his career. Matt
Marksberry fanned two and relinquished one hit. Marksberry also
picked up a win in relief last week, allowing two hits and striking
out five in 3 2/3 innings on Tuesday vs. Maryland Eastern
Shore.
Brenneman
on Track to Shatter Hit by Pitch Record
Jimmy
Brenneman could easily break the Campbell single-season hit by
pitch record by the end of the season. The junior has been hit 23
times so far this season, for second all-time, through just 25
games. Chris
Bangi (2009-10) owns both the first and third highest hit by
pitch totals in CU history with 30 in 2009 and 22 in
2010.
Alan
Denman, who was hit by 15 pitches last season (now tied for
fifth in single-season history), has already been hit 12 times,
tying the senior for 10th.
Brenneman leads the nation in the category, while Denman ranks
third.
Leading
the Camels
Ellis
Lowe leads the Camels in batting average (.381), hits (40),
doubles (10), total bases (55) and slugging percentage (.524),
while adding 21 RBI, 19 runs scored and a home run. The senior
infielder is hitting .524 over his last five games, driving in
eight runs over that span. Josh Hlskey is batting .340 on the year
with a team-high three home runs, while adding 19 RBI.
Jimmy
Brenneman is hitting .338 with 32 runs scored and 16 stolen
bases, reaching base at a 544 clip. The junior outfielder has been
hit by 23 pitches on the season, leading the nation.
Freshman Ryan
Koopman leads the Camels with a 3-4 record on the season,
holding a 4.17 ERA through seven games and 36 2/3 innings of work.
Koopman, who has a complete game to his credit this season, has
fanned 20 batters while opponents are hitting .257. Ryan
Mattes (1-1, 5.71 ERA) and Logan
Self (1-3, 8.13 ERA) pace the Camels with 28 strikeouts, while
Jake
Smith has a pair of saves.
Lowe
Setting High Career Marks
Ellis
Lowe became Campbell's all-time hits leader earlier this season
at East Carolina, picking up three hits to move past Kent Cox's
(1993-96) school record. The senior now has 295 career hits atop
CU's all-time list. The senior also pushed his name to the top of
the runs and at-bats record lists, now standing at 172 runs and 794
at-bats, after passing both the marks during the Northwestern
series.
In addition to becoming Campbell's all-time hits leader, Lowe now
ranks fourth in RBI (152), eighth in stolen bases (41), second in
doubles (63) and third in total bases (397).
Lowe needs just two bases and two doubles to tie the total bases
and doubles career records.
Scouting
the Blue Devils
Duke
(15-11, 2-7 ACC) comes into Tuesday's midweek matchup on a seven
game losing streak following series sweeps at the hands of No. 16
Clemson and No. 12 North Carolina on the road, plus a 6-3 loss
against Ohio in Durham.
Jeff Kremer leads the Blue Devils on the season with a .357 average
20 runs scored and 14 RBI, while Chris Marconcini owns a .313
average to go along with team highs of 24 RBI and 23 runs scored.
Anthony D'Alessandro adds 17 RBI and runs with a .356 clip at the
plate.
Joe Pfisterer is slated for the start Tuesday at Taylor Field,
carrying a 1-2 record and a 5.60 ERA. Pfisterer has appeared in
seven games with five starts, striking out 19 in 27 1/3
innings.
The Camels and Duke locked up once already this season, with the
Blue Devils taking a 9-2 win at Jack Coombs Field in Durham. CU
took an early lead with a run in the first and the third, but the
Devils followed with seven scores in the bottom of the third and
another in the fourth and seventh.
