BUIES CREEK, N.C. - Senior Katie
Woodcock picked up a save in the first game and the win in the
second game to power Campbell's softball team (18-17, 4-2 Atlantic
Sun) to a sweep of league rival Stetson (14-17, 0-2 Atlantic Sun)
on Tuesday, March 29.
Woodcock entered the first game in the seventh inning with CU
nursing a one-run advantage and promptly found herself in trouble.
Meredith Owen greeted her with a single through the left side.
Lindsey Guenther was inserted to run for Owen and moved to second
and then third on back-to-back hit by pitches by Brittany Knipp and
Chrissy Morello. Woodcock then struck out Chelsey Trotto for the
first out. Morello was ruled to have left first early for the
second out. Alyssa Oddo struck out to end the game. The save was
Woodcock's nation-leading sixth of the season.
Stetson started the scoring and pushed a run across in the third
inning. Morello singled, stole second and scored on Trotto's
double.
Campbell scored all the team's runs in the opening game in the
fourth inning. Junior Taylor
McGee tied the game with her seventh home run of the season.
Freshman Raven
Lee followed with a single to left. Fellow freshman Jessi
Lane was inserted to run for Lee and motored all the way around
the bases and scored on sophomore Sarah
Forgacs' double.
Junior Christina
Melton (4-3) was dominating in the circle for Campbell and
allowed just five hits and struck out nine in six innings. Melton
has now fanned 19 batters in her last two conference outings. Owen
(5-6) was the tough luck loser for Stetson. She allowed just five
hits and two runs with six strikeouts in her six innings of
work.
Woodcock (6-1) received the start in the second game and threw five
effective innings. She gave up three runs (two earned) with no
walks and four strikeouts.
The Camels took the lead in the second game in the second inning as
senior Lauren
Stephan doubled in McGee with the team's first run.
The Hatters tied the game up in the third. Knipp reached on a
lead-off single, moved to second on a Trotto single, took third on
a bunt single from Oddo and scored on a throwing error from the CU
pitcher.
Campbell promptly took the lead back with three in the third
inning. Senior Keeli Michael singled to center. Fellow senior Katie
Hinton reached on a bunt single. Forgacs was then hit by a
pitch to load the bases. A walk to McGee drove in Michael with the
first tally of the frame. Lee then poked a single through the right
side to score Hinton and Forgacs and give Campbell the lead for
good.
The CU offense added two more to the lead in the fourth on
back-to-back home runs from Michael and Hinton to increase the
margin to 6-1. The home run by Michael was her first of the season.
The homer from Hinton was her second.
Stetson began to creep back in the game with two in the fifth
inning. Knipp doubled and was aboard on Morello's home run.
CU answered with a two-spot in the bottom of the frame. Forgacs
walked, moved to second on a ground out, took third on a Lee single
and scored on Stephan's single up the middle. Freshman Katie
Andrews pinch hit and picked up her first career hit and RBI as
pinch runner Jessi
Lane scored from second on the single up the middle.
The Hatters closed the gap to 8-6 with three runs in the sixth
inning. After the first batter was retired, Chelsea Whalley,
Camille Czarnecki and Knipp singled. Whalley scored from second on
Knipp single as the CU first baseman threw ball away passed the
covered first base bag. Morello then drove in Czarnecki with a
single. Trotto followed the team's fifth single of the inning to
load the bases. After the second out was recorded on a strikeout,
Katelyn Perna was hit by a pitch to drive in Knipp.
Stetson made the game exciting to the last out in the seventh
inning. Sophomore Brittany Arnn was inserted to pitch to start the
frame and gave up back-to-back singles to Jill Semento and Whalley.
Arnn retired the next two in order. Morello loaded the bases and
reached on the fielding error from the CU shortstop. Trotto then
singled in Semento with her infield single. The single allowed
Whalley and Morello to move into scoring position with the
game-tying and the potential game-winning run. Oddo was then struck
out by Arnn to preserve the 8-7 victory. Arnn earned her second
save of the season with the exciting seventh inning.
Courtney Gunby (2-6) allowed five runs (four earned) in 3.2 innings
in the loss for Stetson.
The Camels take to road and travel to the city of Nashville to take
on Lipscomb (April 1) and Belmont (April 2) later this week. CU is
slated to take on Lipscomb at 5 p.m. EST on Friday evening.
