MACON, GA.-Haley Nelson scored 12 of her game-high 16 points in the
second half while the Lady Camels shot 22 percent for the game, as
Belmont downed Campbell 54-42 in Atlantic Sun Championship
Quarterfinal action Thursday night.
The Lady Camels fall to 13-17 on the season, while Belmont improves
to 11-19 with the win.
Sophomore guard Tonisha
Baker led the Lady Camels on the night with 10 points and 10
rebounds for her second double-double of the year. Jazmine
Cooper, a sophomore forward, posted 11 points, 10 in the first
half, adding four boards, while junior guard Kate
Cloxton totaled eight points.
Senior forward Lauren
Yesh, who played in her school record 120th career
game on Thursday, tallied four points, four boards and four steals,
while senior guard Courtney
Cannon posted two points, five rebounds and two steals.
Nelson's 16 points came on 8-of-14 shooting, adding five rebounds.
Shaunda Strayhorn recorded 13 points and four rebounds, while Molly
Ernst and Alyssa Visbeen tallied nine each. Tereva Moore tacked on
a game-high 12 rebounds to go along with three assists for the
Bruins.
With Campbell leading 9-5 in the first, Belmont posted an 8-2 run
fueled by five from Visbeen and another three from Ernst to take a
13-9 lead at the 13:56 mark.
The Lady Camels then answered with an 11-0 run of their own, taking
a 20-13 advantage, capped by a Cooper lay-in with 9:08 remaining in
the frame.
The Bruins mounted another run to close the half, notching an 11-2
streak as the Lady Camels could not connect on a basket in the
half's final 5:26. Belmont, however, did not hit a field goal in
the final 2:22 of the half, taking a 24-22 lead into the break.
The Bruins led by six at the 14:21 mark in the second frame, 34-28,
but five straight from the Lady Camels, including a three from
Cloxton, cut the Belmont lead to one with 9:35 remaining.
Belmont came back with a 12-2 streak, capped with an Ernst three
from the left corner to put the Bruins up 46-35 with 5:01
remaining. From there, the Lady Camels would make one more run,
bringing the game within six with 3:06 to go, but Belmont finished
the game on an 8-2 run for the 54-42 win.
The Bruins advance and move on to face Stetson at 6:30 p.m.
tomorrow night in the tournament semifinals
