Sum Named A-Sun Player of the Year; Guillen Named Freshman of the Year

BUIES CREEK, N.C. - Davy Sum was unanimously voted as the Atlantic Sun player of the year, the conference announced Tuesday. Fernando Guillen was named freshman of the year and Dominik Kaniewski was named to the all-conference second team.

This is Sum's fourth all-conference selection. He is only the third Camel to win the honors in all four years played, and the first since Igor Brezac in 1989-92. Sum is also the first Camel to win player of the year honors since Rodrigo Cagide and 1990.

The Strasbourg, France native finished the regular season with a 30-4 overall record, 20-0 in dual play, and 10-0 in A-Sun play. Sum compiled a 24-8 doubles record with teammates Dominik Kaniewksi and Ondrej Kralik. Sum will finish his Campbell Career as the all time career wins leader with a current record of 108-29. He is currently ranked 124 in the nation according to the latest ITA rankings.

"I couldn't be happier for Davy," said head coach David Johnson. "He came in four years ago as a freshman and has improved each year. He has gotten stronger, matured, gained more confidence, and a greater knowledge of the game. We will truly miss him next season"

Guillen was named freshman of the year following a 15-5 overall record and a 7-3 record in A-Sun play. He is also 9-8 in doubles play with teammates Larbi Lamzouri and David Clavera. The San Louis Potoci, Mexico native is the first ever Camel to win the award. This is the seventh straight year that Campbell has had a player on the all-freshman team.

Kaniewski was named to the all-conference second team for the first time in his career. The Bydgoszcsz, Poland native finishes the season with a 19-9 overall record, 12-3 in dual play, and 6-1 in A-Sun play. He is 22-8 overall in doubles play with Sum, 14-2 in dual season, and 8-0 in A-Sun play.

No. 3 Campbell vs. No. 6 Lipscomb in First Round of A-Sun Tournament

Following its third consecutive 16 win season, Campbell enters the A-Sun Championships as the number three seed and will take on the number six seed Lipscomb Thursday in the first round. Match time is set for 4:30 p.m. at the Mandy Stoll Tennis Center on the campus of Stetson University in DeLand Fla.

The Camels and the Bisons faced off on April 2, with Campbell picking up a 6-1 victory. The Camels swept through doubles play and earned victories from Sum, Lamzouri, Guillen, Clavera, and Josep Baro in the top five spots.

"Lipscomb is a much improved team," said Coach Johnson. "In the past they were always one of the weaker teams in conference, but (head coach) Andrew Harris has done a fantastic job with them and brought in some great talent. They are strong up top and throughout the lineup and have had some good wins throughout the year. They played us a couple weeks ago and we came out with a victory, but they are a force to be reckoned with, so we are in no way taking them lightly."

Lipscomb is lead by all-conference first team selection Oliver Strecker. Strekcer is 11-6 overall in singles play and 5-5 in A-Sun play in the one spot.

The winner of the match will face second seed East Tennessee State on Friday in the semifinals. The Bucs defeated Campbell 5-2 on March 29 in Buies Creek.

Campbell is searching for its fourth consecutive A-Sun semifinals and its first finals since 2004.
