CREEK, N.C. - Coming of an 8-2 A-Sun record, number two seeded
Campbell will begin its A-Sun championship run Friday morning
against the number three seeded UNF in the A-Sun Championships
semifinals. Match time is set for 11:30 a.m. at the Stoll Tennis
Center in DeLand Fla.
The Camels are lead by first team all-conference members Lisa
Sutton and Karolina
Chernaya. Sutton is 15-5 overall this season in singles play
and 8-2 in A-Sun play. The Kelsall, England native is also 14-4 in
doubles play with teammate Dominek
Wallaart.
Chernaya is 18-2 overall in singles play with a 10-0 record in
A-Sun play. The Islamabad, Pakistan native is 14-3 in doubles play
with partner Borislava
Nikolova. Chernaya is the first player in Campbell history to
be named to the all-freshman team and the all-conference team in
the same season.
Campbell is anchored in the three and four spots by Nikolova and Heather
Robinson. Nikolova is 13-6 in singles play (8-2 A-Sun) while
Robinson is 7-7 overall (4-4 A-Sun).
UNF earned a berth in the semifinals by defeating Jacksonville 4-1
in the first round. The Ospreys are lead by first team
all-conference members Aline Berkenbrock and Danielle Day. Simona
Weymer earned second team honors for UNF.
The two teams met on March 12 in Buies Creek with Campbell edging
out a 4-3 victory. The Camels earned the doubles point and earned
singles victories by Sutton (1), Chernaya (2), and Natasha
Afridi (6).
"We beat them 4-3 earlier in the season, so it should be a close
match," said Sutton." The fact that we have beaten them gives us
confidence, but it will be a tough match, especially in the hot
weather."
The winner of the CU / UNF match will face the winner of the
Stetson / ETSU semifinals match in the championship on
Saturday.
