JOHNSON CITY, Tenn. - Campbell's softball team (28-22, 10-7
Atlantic Sun) defeated East Tennessee State (15-30, 3-14 Atlantic
Sun) 7-1 in the team's first game at the Betty Basler Field on
Friday, April 22.
Senior Katie Woodcock (11-2) threw a complete game three-hitter to
earn the victory. The loss went to Jessica Duncan (8-13), who
allowed four runs in two innings. Shelby Morris threw five innings
and allowed three runs in relief.
The Camels defense found itself in trouble to start the first
inning on back-to-back hits from Sam Lower and Katie Henderson. A
bunt moved both runners over a base. Junior Christina
Melton then made a nice defensive play to cut down the lead
runner at the plate on a bunt attempt from Katie Wolff. Woodcock
induced a ground out to second to end the inning.
CU's offense capitalized on the change in momentum and scored three
in the second inning. Freshman Raven
Lee and senior Lizzie
Goldbach walked to start the frame. Woodcock was inserted to
run for Lee and both she and Goldbach scored on Melton's three-run
home run. The home run was her fifth of the season.
The Camels added two in the third inning. Senior Amanda
Miller led-off the CU third with a home run. The home run was
her fifth of the campaign. Sophomore Sarah
Forgacs then punched a single through the right side, stole
second, moved to third on a fielder's choice and came in to score
on Lee's fielder's choice grounder.
CU added the final two runs to the lead in the fifth. Miller walked
and went to second on Forgacs' bunt single. The errant throw off
the bunt allowed her to reach third. A wild pitch allowed Miller to
scamper home with the team's sixth run. Forgacs, who had moved all
the way to third on the wild pitch, then scored on senior Lauren
Stephan's sacrifice fly.
ETSU chipped away at the lead with a run in the bottom of the
frame. Sam Lower reached on a fielder's choice and took second on
the overthrow from the CU second baseman. Katie Henderson followed
with a double down the left field line to score Lower.
