JOHNSON CITY, Tenn. - Campbell's softball team (29-22, 11-7
Atlantic Sun) scored two runs in each of the last three innings to
defeat East Tennessee State (15-31, 3-16 Atlantic Sun) by a 7-4
score at Betty Basler Field on April 22. The wins in the two games
clinch a berth in 2011 Atlantic Sun Conference Tournament for CU.
The team's seeding is still to be determined.
Junior Christina
Melton (5-5) earned the win with five innings pitched and three
runs allowed (two earned). She also struck out five and didn't walk
a batter. Senior Katie
Woodcock came in to earn her eight save of the season with two
innings of work. Woodcock worked double duty as she also threw a
complete game in the team's first game of the day.
ETSU scored a pair of runs in the opening inning. Sam Lower doubled
to start the game. She came in to score on the two-out single from
Tara Hartnett. Hartnett took second and then third on the throwing
error from the Campbell right fielder. She came in to score on the
same play as the CU third baseman threw the ball away.
The Camels loaded the bases in the second on single from freshman
Raven
Lee and walks to Melton and senior Keeli
Michael, but a strikeout ended the inning.
Senior Lauren
Stephan cut the deficit in half with her solo home run in the
third inning. The home run was her 10th of the
season.
ETSU added on to the lead with a run in the bottom of the inning.
Arielle Garner was hit by a pitch. Lower moved her to second with a
single. After a strikeout, Katie Henderson doubled in Garner with
the team's third run of the game.
CU tied the game with two runs in the fifth inning. Senior Amanda
Miller singled to start the inning and came in to score on
Lee's home run. The blast was her fifth of the season. It was her
third hit of the game.
The Camels took the lead with two in the sixth inning. Melton
walked and moved to second on the sacrifice bunt from Michael.
Senior Katie
Hinton drove in Melton with her single up the middle. Senior Amanda
Miller then pushed a single up the middle to score Hinton with
the team's second run of the inning and fifth of the game. The hit
was the third of the game from CU.
CU increased the margin by two with a pair of runs in the top of
the seventh. Senior Lizzie Goldbach started the rally with a single
up the middle and was aboard on junior Taylor
McGee's home run. Her home run was her 11th of the
season.
ETSU made the final score 7-4 with a home run from Whitley Hensley
in the bottom of the seventh inning.
The Camels complete the regular season road schedule and the
conference slate with a pair of games against USC Upstate on April
23 starting at 4 p.m.
