BUIES CREEK, N.C. - Campbell's softball team (21-18, 7-3 Atlantic
Sun Conference), who are riding a three-game winning streak, look
to keep the winning ways going and plays a pair of doubleheaders
this week. The Camels begin the week and travel to Hampton, Va. to
take on the Hampton Lady Pirates on April 6 in a doubleheader
starting at 2 p.m. CU then returns home, gets back into league play
and takes on Kennesaw State for two games on April 9 starting at
noon.
Campbell went 5-1 last week with conference doubleheader wins over
Stetson and Belmont plus a split two-game set against Lipscomb.
Senior Katie
Hinton was outstanding and hit .526 with 10 hits, seven runs,
five RBIs, four walks and five stolen bases. She was honored by the
Atlantic Sun Conference as Player of the Week for the second time
this season on Monday. Hinton became the first Campbell player
since Shannon O'Bryan in 2001 to capture the award more than once
in a year. She is just the third Campbell player to be honored by
the Atlantic Sun more than once in a season along with O'Bryan and
Denelle Hicks. Hicks captured A-Sun Player of the Week honors twice
in both 1995 and 1996.
Fellow senior Lauren
Stephan also had a strong week for Campbell with a .438 batting
average and seven hits. Amanda
Miller continued her strong senior campaign with a .391 week,
nine hits and seven RBIs. Katie Woodcock played a part in four of
Campbell's wins with two wins, two saves and a 1.91 ERA last week.
Woodcock enters the week with a conference and national leading
seven saves.
Hampton (9-21) won two of its three games over the weekend against
conference rival Maryland Eastern Shore. The Lady Pirates had a
10-game winless streak earlier this season. Senior Bre'Anna Brown
leads the team with a .312 batting average and is tied for the team
lead with 24 hits. Sophomore Tamara Vickers also has 24 hits on the
season and leads the team with 20 runs scored and 14 stolen bases
.Junior Travonna Byrd leads the squad with 16 RBIs. Sophomore Carla
Trimble also has reached double figures in RBIs with 10. Byrd also
serves as one of the team's primary pitchers and has thrown 80
innings. Senior Tiffany Brents leads the team with four wins on the
season. The Lady Pirates have already faced off with three Campbell
opponents this season and are 0-6 with losses to N.C. Central, USC
Upstate and Longwood. Campbell is 2-0 all-time against Hampton. CU
defeated the Lady Pirates by 6-2 and 4-1 scores in Buies Creek in
2010.
Kennesaw State (20-14, 4-4 Atlantic Sun) fought back with two runs
in the bottom of the seventh to split the team's doubleheader with
Florida Gulf Coast last weekend. The Owls are set to take on
traditional Atlantic Coast Conference (ACC) softball power No. 24
Georgia Tech on Wednesday before coming to Buies Creek for the
weekend. Sophomore Sharon Swanson is the top hitter for KSU and
currently leads the team and conference with 37 RBIs, 44 hits and
77 total bases. Swanson is currently hitting .393 and is second in
the league with nine home runs and a slugging percentage of .688.
Sophomore outfielder Sara Sikes has also been impressive with a
.336 batting average and 39 hits. Junior Jessica Cross is second on
the team with seven home runs and 21 RBIs. The Owls have been using
three primary pitchers this season. Cross leads the team with eight
wins, 78.1 innings thrown and five complete games. Sophomore Abbey
Meixel has a team-high 84 strikeouts in 64.2 innings thrown.
Freshman Amanda Henderson has the lowest ERA and batting average
against on the team at 2.05 and .232, respectfully. Sophomore
Ashlee Burkett, who is the reigning conference freshman of the
year, is hitting .290 with 31 hits, 21 runs, three home runs and 14
RBIs. The Owls have been a strong road team this season with seven
wins in 12 attempts. Kennesaw State leads the series between the
schools at 6-4. The Camels and Owls split the doubleheader in
Kennesaw, Ga. last season. Campbell won the second game 5-1. The
game was historic for former CU starter Brittany Stanley, who set
the school victory mark with the win over the Owls.
After this week the Camels will hit the road and take on UNC
Wilmington for two games on April 12 starting at 4 p.m.
