Stephan Slugs Softball To Split With Kennesaw State; Homers Three Times And Drives in Seven

BUIES CREEK, N.C. - Senior Lauren Stephan made softball's Senior Day memorable with a school-record three home run performance in the team's second game 8-4 win over Kennesaw State on April 9 at the Eakes Athletic Complex. Stephan also drove in seven runs in the second game for the Camels. The win allowed CU (24-19, 8-4) to salvage a split with the Owls (21-18, 5-5), who won the first game 17-1. The loss in the first game snapped Campbell's five game winning streak.

The Camels, after falling in the first game, were again facing an early 4-0 deficit in the second game when Stephan breathed life into the offense with her three-run home run in the bottom of the second inning. Sophomore Sarah Forgacs started the rally with a lead-off single. Fellow sophomore Sarah Ling then drew a one-out walk. Stephan stepped to the dish and launched a three-run bomb to get the Camels to within a run at 4-3 heading to the third inning.

Campbell took the lead for good in the fourth inning with a four spot. Junior Taylor McGee tied the game up with her ninth home run of the season. Freshman Raven Lee followed with double off the wall. Senior Lizzie Goldbach was inserted to run for Lee. Ling again walked and both Goldbach and Ling came in to score on Stephan's second three-run home run of the game.

Stephan finished off the feat and broke the school record with her solo home run in the sixth inning. The home run broke Campbell's single game home run mark that had been set at two and tied most recently by Stephan against Charleston Southern on March 22 of this season. Stephan's home run was her ninth of the season and fourth of the week. Her seven RBIs in the second game were one away from the school record behind Martha Covington's eight in 1996.

Senior Katie Woodcock (8-1) earned the win for Campbell. After allowing four runs in the first two innings, she settled down and allowed just three more hits the rest of the game and struck out four. Woodcock was aided by her defense as senior Keeli Michael started an inning ending double play at third base to stop the sixth inning and fellow senior Amanda Miller making a spectacular diving stop at shortstop and getting a force out at second on a sure base hit up the middle in the seventh inning. The loss in the second game went to Amanda Henderson (4-6), who allowed four runs in 2.2 innings of relief.

KSU's Jessica Cross had herself a day. Cross (9-5) earned the win in the first game and allowed just one run in five innings. She also homered three times on the day and drove in eight between the two games. She drove in five runs in the first game with two home runs and a double. She also hit a three-run home run in the second game.

CU's lone run in the first game was a solo home run from Forgacs in the third inning. The home run was her first of the season.

KSU jumped all over the Camels with eight runs in the first, five more in the second, and four in the fourth. The loss went to junior Christina Melton (4-5), who allowed six runs in her 1/3 of an inning worked.

The Camels now get out of conference play and takes on UNC Wilmington on April 12 in a doubleheader starting at 4 p.m. in Wilmington, N.C.
