Softball Stays Alive; Defeats Kennesaw State 7-1 On Second Day of Atlantic Sun Tournament

SPARTANBURG, N.C. - Campbell's softball team (31-27, 11-9 Atlantic Sun) blasted a pair of three-run home runs to defeat Kennesaw State (28-27, 10-10 Atlantic Sun) in the team's second day at the Atlantic Sun Conference Tournament by a 7-1 score. The Camels will now advance to the third day on May 13th and play another elimination game at 3 p.m. against Mercer.

Sophomore Brittany Arnn (6-8) was masterful in throwing the first complete game of her career. She allowed just five hits and one unearned run with four strikeouts. The loss went to KSU'S Jessica Cross (13-9), who allowed two runs in three innings.

Senior Amanda Miller continued her strong tournament with two more hits and a run scored. The team also received three-run home runs from freshman Raven Lee and senior Lauren Stephan.

The Camels were able to pick up 10 hits and three walks on the day.

The Camels wasted no time picking up the first hit of the game on Miller's lead-off single. She was moved to second on a sacrifice but could get no farther as the next two were retired in order.

KSU scored the first run of the game in the third inning on a Campbell throwing error. Ashlee Burkett walked and moved to second on the fielding error from the CU shortstop off the ball hit from Sharon Swanson. A throwing error on the CU shortstop off the two-out hit from Bianca Durant allowed Burkett to score from second.

Campbell took the lead in the fourth. Junior Taylor McGee and senior Katie Hinton both walked to start the frame. Freshman Raven Lee then blasted a two-strike three-run home run over the right field wall. The home run was her seventh of the season. The lead gained would be one that Campbell would not relinquish the rest of the game.

The CU offense kept it going with three more runs in the fifth inning. Miller began the inning with a single. Senior Keeli Michael then walked and both runners scored on Stephan's three-run bomb to right field. The home run was her 13th of the season and her fourth of the year against Kennesaw State pitching. She also now leads the team with 38 RBIs.

The Camels added a single tally in the sixth inning. Junior Christina Melton walked. Sophomore Sarah Ling was then inserted to run for her. Sophomore Sarah Forgacs reached on a bunt single. Ling took third on the throwing error on the play. Miller drove in Ling with a sacrifice fly to left field.

Campbell will continue play in the Atlantic Sun Conference Tournament in Spartanburg, S.C. on May 13th at 3 p.m. in an elimination game against Mercer.
