SPARTANBURG, N.C. - Campbell's softball team (32-28) could not pull
off the upset and extend its season with a 7-2 loss to Lipscomb
(30-19) on Friday, May 13, at Cyrill Stadium on the third day of
the Atlantic Sun Tournament Championship. The Camels had won the
earlier game in the day but could not overcome a LU in the
loss.
CU's Olivia
Scarborough (4-5) was tagged with the loss and allowed four
runs in 3.1 innings thrown. Senior Katie
Woodcock gave up three run in her one inning of relief. Ali
Watson (8-4) was steady for Lipscomb and went the distance and
allowed two run (one earned) with a strikeout.
Lipscomb scored two in the first inning. Breanna Thurman started
the inning with a walk. Mackenzie Tucker followed with an infield
single that glanced off the CU third baseman before going foul. A
sacrifice bunt moved both runners over. Mollie Mitchell then walked
to load the bases. After a pop out, Kristen Sturdivant fouled off
several 3-2 pitches before pushing a single past the CU shortstop
to score Thurman and Tucker with the first two runs.
The Camels threatened in the fourth inning. Junior Taylor
McGee and senior Katie
Hinton reached on two-out singles. Freshman Raven
Lee followed with a bounding ground ball to third that was
misplayed and allowed all to be safe. Watson got out of the inning
with a ground out.
The Lady Bisons capitalized on the change in momentum and scored
three in the fourth inning. Sturdivant reached on walk. Shelby
Cunningham was inserted to run for Sturdivant and moved to second
on Vanessa Medina's single. A wild pitch moved both runners up a
base. Cunningham scored the first run of inning on a squeeze bunt
from Rena Cothron. Bridgette Begle followed with a two-run double
to increase the margin to five.
The Camels would not go down without a fight. Sophomore Sarah
Ling began the fifth with a double. Sophomore Sarah
Forgacs reached on a fielding error that allowed Ling to move
to third. A double steal scored the first run as Ling scampered
home on the back half of the steal. Forgacs moved to third on a
ground out and scored the team's second run senior Keeli
Michael's ground out.
Lipscomb got both the runs back in the fifth inning. Mitchell
doubled and came in to score LU's sixth run on Courtney
Billington's RBI double. The Lady Bisons added a second run on a
dropped fly by CU with the bases loaded.
The game was the final in the careers of Campbell seniors Amanda
Miller, Lizzie
Goldbach, Melissa
Elks, Keeli
Michael, Katie
Hinton, Lauren
Stephan and Katie
Woodcock. The group was the backbone of Campbell teams that
made two Atlantic Sun Tournament Champion teams that made the NCAA
Tournament twice.
