RADFORD, VA. -- Vaita Guillaume of Campbell University is tied for
third place after Thursday's first round of the NCAA Men's Golf
Virginia Tech Regional at the Pete Dye River Course.
The junior from
Papeete, Tahiti shot a one-under-par 71 on the 7685-yard layout.
His round included five birdies and nine pars. Teammate Matt Moot,
who also received an individual berth to the regional, is tied for
14th place at two-over 74 heading into Friday's second round of the
54-hole event. The senior from Johnstown, Pa., played the front
nine even par and was two-over on the back side.
Kyle Scott of Georgia
Tech leads the field at four-under-par 68, two strokes ahead of
Oklahoma's Abraham Ancer (70). Only six golfers broke par on
Thursday.
Guillaume
and Moot were two of 10 individuals chosen along with 13 teams
competing in the regional. The low
five teams and the low individual not on those teams from each of
the six regional championships will advance to the NCAA finals, May
31-June 5 at Karsten Creek in Stillwater, Okla.
Georgia Tech leads
the team standings at one-over 289, followed by Duke (295), Kent
State (296), Oklahoma (296) and Coastal Carolina (299).
Bentgrass tees, fairways and greens, strategically-placed
Dye-trademark pot bunkers and breathtaking river vistas from all 18
holes highlight the links design. The layout winds along 2.5 miles
of the scenic and historic New River with eight holes directly
affected by its presence.
The par threes face north, south, east and west. The remaining 14
holes require a mixture of shots, as seven play left-to-right and
the other seven play right-to-left. The par fives on each side
head in opposite directions, as do the two longest par fours. For
the NCAA Regional, the Pete Dye River Course will play to par-72,
7685 yards.

Play is scheduled to begin on Friday at 8:00 a.m. and at 7:30 a.m.
