CREEK, N.C. - Rashad Campbell, Adoniss Jones and Diego Lawrence
will represent Campbell University this week in the NCAA Division I
Outdoor Track & Field Championships East Preliminary Round at
Bloomington, Ind.
Campbell will compete in the 100 meter dash and Lawrence in the
long jump on Thursday at 6:00 p.m., at the Robert C. Haugh Track
& Field Complex on the campus of Indiana University. Jones
will run in the 110 hurdles Friday at 5:00 p.m.
Lawrence enters the event after earning Most Valuable Performer
honors at both the Atlantic Sun Conference indoor and outdoor
championships. He garnered a total of nine all-conference medals
in the two meets.
In the 2011 A-Sun outdoor meet, Lawrence set personal records in
the 100 meters (10.54), 200 meters (21.20), long jump (7.69) and
triple jump (14.79).
The sophomore from Waxhaw, N.C., is seeded 11th in the East
Regional long jump with a distance of 7.72 meters (25-feet,
4-inches) that he recorded when finishing second at the Clemson Bob
Pollock Spring Invitational earlier this month.
Lawrence won long jump titles this spring in outdoor meets hosted
by Coastal Carolina, South Carolina and the Atlantic Sun Conference
in addition to the Aggie Classic, hosted by North Carolina
A&T. He has claimed 11 career wins in the event between indoor
and outdoor competition.
"Diego made the regional meet last year as a freshman and really
didn't know what to expect which showed in his performance," said
head coach Jim Patchell. "This year he has quite a bit more
experience competing against the best jumpers in the country and is
going into the regional meet with a much better ranking. We are
expecting Diego to move on to the national championships."
A senior from Port-of-Spain, Trinidad, Jones qualified for the
regional meet for the third time in his career. Last season, he
set a school record in the 110 hurdles (13.88 seconds) at the East
Regional meet to qualify for the NCAA Nationals at Eugene, Ore.
In his final season, Jones finished third in the Atlantic Sun
Championships 110 hurdles and placed among the top four in the
event in every race he ran during the outdoor season. He earned
all-conference honors in three events at the A-Sun outdoor meet -
110 hurdles, 400 hurdles and triple jump.
Jones has claimed 12 all-conference honors by finishing among the
top three in an event at league indoor and outdoor championships
during his four-year career. He is seeded 17th in the 110 hurdles
for the 2011 regional.
"Once again, Adoniss has done a great job for us this year," said
Patchell. "He made the national finals in 2010 and he is ahead of
where he was at this time last year in both performances and
training, so we are looking for him to be there again."
After earning Most Outstanding Track Performer honors at the 2011
A-Sun indoor championships, Rashad Campbell continued a strong
season by earning runner-up honors in the 100 meters and 4x100
relay at the league outdoor meet.
The junior from Henderson, N.C., won both the 60 meter and
200-meter dashes at the A-Sun indoor championships. He set a
school outdoor record in the 100 meters (10.48 seconds) at the
A-Sun outdoor qualifying round then ran a 10.49 to place second in
the finals. He is seeded 45th in event for the NCAA East
Regional.
He was also a member of the school-record setting 4x100-meter relay
unit that won the 2010 A-Sun outdoor title and finished second this
year.
"Rashad has made a huge jump in his performance from last year and
we are thrilled that he has qualified for the regional as well,"
said Patchell. "This will be Rashad's first experience at this
high of a level, but I believe he is prepared for it and he should
run well."
