BUIES CREEK, N.C. - Campbell's softball team (30-24, 11-9 Atlantic
Sun) has a busy week of action on slate this week. The Camels will
get in a final regular season tune-up and takes on Longwood (32-11)
at home on Monday, May 9, in a doubleheader starting at noon. CU
then will attempt to close out the team's play in the Atlantic Sun
Conference with a bang with another A-Sun Tournament title from May
11-14. The Camels have won the Atlantic Sun Conference Tournament
title in two of the last three seasons and head off to Spartanburg,
S.C. at Cyrill Stadium as the fourth seed. The Camels begin
tournament play with a 2 p.m. game against fifth seed Mercer on
Wednesday, May 11. The winner of that game advances and takes on
top seed Jacksonville on May 12 at 12:30 p.m. The loser of the
Campbell and Mercer game takes on the loser of the No. 3 seed USC
Upstate/No. 6 seed Kennesaw State in an elimination game at 10 a.m.
on May 12.
Campbell gained entry to the tournament with the team's sweep of
East Tennessee State on April 22. Senior Katie
Woodcock threw a complete game three-hitter in the first game
for the Camels. She came in relief to earn her nation's leading
eighth save of the season in the second game. Junior Christina
Melton was both a hitting and pitching star on the day with a
three-run home run in the first game and five shutout innings in
the second game.
Before taking a break for final exams the Camels were able to get
in a game against North Carolina Central on April 25. In that game
freshman Olivia
Scarborough threw her first career no-hitter. The no-hitter was
the first for a Campbell pitcher since Brittany Stanley threw a
perfect game exactly three years to the day against Gardner-Webb in
2008. Scarborough also recorded a career-high nine strikeouts in
the 10-0 victory. Freshman Raven
Lee provided all the offense Scarborough would need in the game
with a first inning grand slam. The win allowed Campbell to reach
30 wins for the eighth time in school and third time the last four
seasons.
The Camels' offense is being led by senior Amanda
Miller this season. Miller leads the team in batting average
(.338), runs (33), hits (51), doubles (13), triples (5), RBIs (36),
total bases (89), on-base percentage (.416) and game-winning RBIs
(9). The Dunn, N.C. native ranks among the top 10 in the conference
in hits (10th), triples (t-1st), runs scored
(t-7th), RBIs (t-6th), total bases
(t-6th) and slugging percentage (t-8th).
Senior Katie
Hinton has twice been named the Atlantic Sun's Player of the
Week (3/21 and 4/4) while hitting .302 with 45 hits, 29 runs, 22
walks and 15 stolen bases. Junior Taylor
McGee enters the week ranking fourth in the league in home runs
(11) and seventh in walks (26). Senior Lauren
Stephan has also been a big contributor this season with 10
home runs and 31 RBIs. Sophomore Sarah
Forgacs leads the conference and has been plunked 14 times. She
is also hitting .291 with 39 hits, 31 runs and 19 RBIs. Senior Keeli
Michael, who was a three and half year starter at second base,
moved across the diamond and has played third base for the second
half of the season and is second on the team with her .307 batting
average, 50 hits and 12 doubles. The Campbell pitcher staff is
spearheaded by Woodcock. The Oshawa, Ontario native leads the team
in wins (11), ERA (2.09), complete games (7), saves (8), innings
pitched (120.1) and strikeouts (100). Woodcock's save total leads
the country
Campbell has won the Atlantic Sun Tournament title in two of the
last three seasons and are 8-2 in the team's last 10 games in A-Sun
Tournament play. This will be the final time that Campbell will
have the opportunity to acquire the crown in the Atlantic Sun as
the school officially changes conferences to the Big South on July
1, 2011. Michael has been a career standout in A-Sun Tournament
play with a career average of .429, five runs and 12 hits. Hinton
has also played well with 11 hits and a .314 career batting
average. McGee has a pair of game-winning home runs, both against
Mercer, in Atlantic Sun Tournament action.
Longwood (34-12) is red-hot and have won six of the last eight
after the victory over East Carolina on May 8. Briana Wells is now
31-12 on the season has pitched in all 46 games this season for the
Lancers with 42 starts. Wells has thrown 277 innings and struck out
184 batters. Fellow senior Brooke Short has hit 16 home runs, 49
RBIs and 54 hits on the season. Nichole Simmons is also hitting
well with a .333 batting average, 41 runs and 49 hits to go along
with seven home runs and 21 RBIs. Longwood has several impressive
wins on the resume this season with victories over Notre Dame,
Virginia, Hawai'i, Virginia Tech, Liberty, Radford and East
Carolina. Campbell holds a slight 5-3 edge in the all-time series
between the schools. The two schools last met in 2009 and split the
series in Farmville. Campbell won the first game 10-0 as Brittany
Stanley threw a one-hit shutout. Senior Lauren
Stephan hit a three-run home run in the first game for the
Camels.
Mercer (30-22, 10-10 Atlantic Sun) played its way into the
tournament and into the fifth seed with a sweep of Kennesaw State
in the team's final conference games of the season on April 30. The
Bears then defeated Presbyterian twice in the team's final games
before the conference tournament on May 8. Mercer was an impressive
15-5 at home this season, but went 15-17 in away and neutral site
games. Freshman McKenzie Woody has been an immediate impact player
in her rookie campaign with 57 hits, 33 runs, 22 stolen bases and a
.337 batting average. Junior Sara Stukes is also hitting well with
a .324 batting average, 10 doubles, six home runs and 37 RBIs.
Freshman Randi Rea has been the team's other source of power with
six home runs and 26 RBIs. Senior Anna Johnson is tied for the
conference lead with 27 stolen bases. Senior Kari Chambers is one
of the top pitchers in the conference with 15 wins, a 1.55 ERA and
160 strikeouts. Fellow senior Jenni Holtz has won 11 games and
struck out 146 batters in 133.1 innings thrown. Campbell leads the
all-time series between the schools by a 28-20 count. The Camels
defeated the Bears by scores of 3-2 and 6-3 earlier this season.
Sophomore Sarah
Ling was the hero of the first game with a game-winning single
in the eighth inning. McGee continued to torment Mercer pitching
and hit her third career home run against the Bears in the second
game to power Campbell.
