BUIES CREEK, N.C. - Campbell's softball team (30-26, 11-9 Atlantic
Sun) ended its regular season with a pair of extra inning losses to
Longwood (36-12) on Monday, May 9, at the Eakes Athletic Complex.
CU lost the first game by a 4-1 count in 11 innings and dropped the
second game by a 5-4 score in nine innings.
Campbell's offense hit three home runs on the afternoon and all
three home runs accounted for the five runs scored, but it was not
enough in the losses. Senior Lauren
Stephan homered twice in the two games and knocked in three in
defeat for the Camels.
Longwood's Briana Wells (33-12) continued her workman like efforts
and threw all 20 innings for the Lancers on the day. Wells has now
pitched in all 48 games for Longwood this season and thrown 32
complete games. The senior only allowed 11 hits and five runs on
the day with 17 strikeouts in her 20 innings in the circle.
Senior Katie
Woodcock (11-5) took the loss in both games. She threw five
innings with three runs allowed (one earned) in the first game and
then three more innings with one run allowed in the second
game.
Campbell took the early lead in the first game on Stephan's third
inning home run. The Lancers promptly tied the game with a run in
the top of the fourth. Brooke Short walked and moved to second on a
sacrifice bunt. Brittney Lakata ran for Short and scored on Tricia
Nelson's RBI single.
The Camels wasted a golden bases loaded no-out situation in the
fifth inning. Senior Lizzie
Goldbach walked and moved to second on freshman Raven
Lee's single. Sophomore Sarah
Ling was ran for Lee and both her and Goldbach moved up a base
on Stephan's single off the top of the right field wall. A pop out
and a pair of ground outs ended the inning though.
Campbell wasted another chance in 10th inning. Stephan
was placed on second and moved to third on freshman Shaela
Churchill's sacrifice bunt. With a runner on third and only one
out Wells record a strikeout and ground out to escape unscored
upon.
Longwood finally broke through for three runs in the
11th inning. Maggie Margadonna was placed on second
base. Leta Bressin ran for Margadonna and scored on the throwing
error from the Campbell pitcher off the sacrifice bunt from Short.
Marci Christian then pinch hit and homered over the right center
wall to give the Lancers a commanding 4-1 lead in what would be the
same score victory.
Longwood jumped on Campbell starter Christina
Melton for two runs in the opening stanza of the second game.
Melton struggled with her control and walked four batters in the
first inning and six in the game in three innings. The Lancers'
Tricia Nelson hit a bases loaded sinking line drive that allowed
Nichole Simmons and Margadonna to score with two outs in the first.
Both runners reached base on walks.
The Lancers added a run in the fourth inning off CU reliever Brittany
Arnn. Simmons reached on a one-out double to left, stole third
and scored on a wild pitch.
The Camels took the lead in the bottom of the frame. Senior Amanda
Miller walked and was on base on Stephan's home run. The home
run was her second of the day and 12th of the season.
Stephan's 26 career home runs are the fourth-most in school
history. Senior Lizzie
Goldbach followed with a single to center. Junior Taylor
McGee then homered to give CU the 4-3 lead. The home run was
her 12th of the season.
LU tied the game with a tally in the sixth inning. Margadonna
reached on a two-out walk and scored all the way from first on
Short's double to right center.
Longwood produced the game winner in the top of the ninth. Short
singled up the middle. Bressin ran for Short and moved to second on
a sacrifice bunt. Ashley Kramer doubled her in for what would be
the fifth and final tally of the game.
Campbell will now travel to the Atlantic Sun Conference Tournament
in Spartanburg, S.C. as the fourth seed and take on fifth seed
Mercer (30-22, 10-10 Atlantic Sun) on Wednesday, May 11 at 2
p.m.
