BUIES CREEK, N.C. - Campbell's softball team (32-28, 11-9 Atlantic
Sun) had another noteworthy season in 2011. The season was
highlighted by Campbell making the Atlantic Sun Tournament for the
sixth consecutive season extending the longest that CU's softball
put together since joining the league prior to the 1995 campaign.
The team also won 30 plus games for the third time in the last four
seasons and the eighth time in school history.
The 2011 season marked another ultra-competitive schedule for CU's
softball program. The Camels played eight games against seven
different teams that made the 2011 NCAA Tournament. The team played
games in six different states ranging all the way from Florida to
Arizona. The team's schedule contained opponents from 16 different
conferences including a pair of trips to Southeastern Conference
teams (Auburn and Georgia). The Camels also hosted the Atlantic
Coast Conference's North Carolina and Virginia during the season
among the 23 home games. The Camels started the 2011 season with a
bang and defeated Virginia by a 7-2 score to open the campaign at
the Hampton Inn Tournament. Throughout the course of the year the
Camels played against the top ranked team in the country at that
point in Georgia on March 4th and the team that won the
national championship in Arizona State on March 10th.
Campbell's 11 wins in Atlantic Sun Conference play was the fourth
time in school history that the program had won 10 or more games in
A-Sun play with the other times being in 2006 (12), 2009 (16) and
2010 (10). The season marked the final time that Camels would play
an Atlantic Sun Conference game as the team moves to the Big South
Conference along with most of the rest of the CU athletic teams on
July 1.
The Camels did walk away with several awards over the course of the
2011 campaign. Senior Amanda
Miller was an Atlantic Sun First Team selection, an A-Sun
All-Tournament Team member and chosen for the North Carolina
Collegiate Sports Information Association's (NCCSIA) University
Softball All-State Team. Miller led the team and conference with
five triples. She placed third in the league in runs scored (38),
fourth in double (15) and total bases (97) plus sixth in hits (57)
and RBIs (37). She also finished eighth in slugging percentage
(.571) and was among the nation's leaders in being toughest to
strikeout (21st). She finished her season with a
team-high nine game-winning RBIs.
Sophomore Sarah
Forgacs was an A-Sun Second Team All-Conference selection for
the second time in as many seasons. In league only play the Cary,
N.C. native hit .304 with 10 runs, 17 hits, two home runs, six
RBIs, five walks and five stolen bases. Overall she hit .278 with
42 hits, 32 runs, 19 RBIs, 16 walks, 14 hit by pitches and 20
stolen bases.
CU's team started the season with a bang and won the Hampton Inn
Tournament in early February with a 6-1 victory over
SIU-Edwardsville in the championship game. The team placed five
players on the all-tournament team in seniors Keeli
Michael, Amanda
Miller and Lizzie
Goldbach, junior Christina
Melton and sophomore Brittany
Arnn. Goldbach was named the most outstanding player in the
tournament after hitting .500 with three multi-hit performances in
four games, six hits and five RBIs.
Senior Lauren
Stephan also made her final season count and led the team with
13 home runs and 39 RBIs. Stephan was named to the 2011 A-Sun
All-Tournament Team. She had a record setting day against Kennesaw
State on April 9. Stephan set a Campbell record with three home
runs in a single game and her seven RBIs was one off the school
record set by Martha Covington in 1996. Stephan, who also worked as
a pitcher during her time with Campbell, became the first softball
player in school history to finish among the top 10 in both home
runs (27-4th) and wins (33-9th).
Both Forgacs and Goldbach also stood out individually in the
classroom and both were able to secure spots on the second team for
the Capital One / Academic All-District III Softball Team. Goldbach
put together a cumulative grade-point average (GPA) as a biology
major and Forgacs sported a cumulative GPA of 3.86 as a
government/pre-law major. Goldbach and Forgacs were the second set
of CU softball teammates to be honored in the same season.
The Camels also stood out in the classroom as team and placed 14 on
the Atlantic Sun's All-Academic Team. CU's group of 14 includes
three student-athletes that achieved a perfect 4.0 GPA in Miller,
Melton and freshman Shaela
Churchill. Goldbach and Michael were selected for the fourth
time. Miller leads the three-time honorees and is joined by fellow
seniors Melissa
Elks and Stephan. Sophomores Brittany
Arnn and Forgacs along with Katie
Hinton, junior Taylor
McGee, Melton and Katie
Woodcock were all named for the second time. The first time
honorees include freshmen Katie
Andrews, Churchill and Raven
Lee. The Camels end its 17-year tenure in the Atlantic Sun
Conference with 76 individuals earning A-Sun All-Academic Softball
Team honors 154 times.
Hinton was named the Atlantic Sun's Softball Player of the Week
twice during the 2011 season. She first took home the weekly award
on March 21 after leading the Camels to a 4-0 record with her .500
batting average, eight hits and seven RBIs. Hinton did the feat
again on April 4 after hitting .526 on the week with 10 hits, seven
runs scored, five RBIs and five stolen bases. Hinton became the
first Campbell player to be named the player of the week twice in a
season since Shannon O'Bryan took home the award three times in
2001.
Freshman Olivia
Scarborough had her own notable feat during the season and
threw Campbell's first no-hitter in exactly three years in the
team's 10-0 victory over North Carolina Central on April 25.
Scarborough's no-hitter was the first of her career and the first
for a Campbell pitcher since Brittany Stanley threw a perfect game
exactly three years to the day.
Woodcock again proved to be one of the top closer in the country in
2011. The Oshawa, Ontario native tied for the nation's lead in
saves with eight. She also tied for the national lead in saves in
2009. Woodcock ended her career as the school's all-time saves
leader with 15. She had a memorable 2011 season in which she led
the Camels in most pitching categories including ERA (2.16), wins
(11), appearances (38), complete games (7), saves (8), innings
pitched (129.1) and strikeouts (101).
Head Coach Drew
Peterson reached a pair of milestone victories in his coaching
career in 2011. Peterson picked up his 300th win at
Campbell in the team's 7-6 win over Creighton on March 11 and the
600th win of his 21-year career in the 2-0 win over UNC
Wilmington on April 12.
The Camels showed off the power again in 2011 and led the
conference in home runs with 53. The team's 53 home runs are the
third-most in school history and the third time in the last four
years that Campbell has topped the 50 home run mark in a season.
The CU offense proved to be one that needed to be dealt with and
led the league in numerous categories including runs (280), triples
(13) and total bases (656). The Camels also ranked second in the
Atlantic Sun in slugging percentage (.420), walks (196) and stolen
bases (68). CU's pitching staff also led the league in saves with
12.
The 2011 season was the final entry in the career of eight Campbell
seniors that led CU to a pair of NCAA Tournament appearances and
two Atlantic Sun Tournament Championships. Many of the graduating
seniors rank highly in Campbell's career record book. Katie
Hinton finished as the school's all-time walk leader (111). She
also placed second in runs scored (158), third in stolen bases
(51), fourth in at-bats (692), fifth in batting average (.319),
games played (232), hits (221), total bases (300) and ninth in
being hit by a pitch (14). Amanda
Miller became the school's all-time assist leader (551) and
finished third in doubles (42), fourth in RBIs (121), fifth in
sacrifice flies (9), at-bats (690), seventh in total bases (299),
eighth in hits (203), runs scored (113) and ninth in walks (59). Lauren
Stephan placed fourth in slugging percentage (.505) and home
runs (27). She also ranked sixth in strike outs (255), ninth in
wins (33) and 10th in appearances (83) as a pitcher. Keeli
Michael placed fifth in walks (74), games played (232) and
assists (469) plus sixth in stolen bases (41).Redshirt junior Amanda
Littlejohn, who has not been able to see the field for the last
three seasons as she battles cancer back home in California,
finished her Campbell career seventh in sacrifice flies (7), eighth
in slugging percentage (.483) and 10th in RBIs (96). Katie
Woodcock ended her career as the school's all-time saves leader
(15) and amassed the second most saves in the history of the
Atlantic Sun Conference.
