BUIES CREEK, N.C. — Campbell head football coach Dale Steele has added Duncan McLaurin and Will Phillippi to his coaching staff for the 2011-12 season.
McLaurin will serve as the defensive assistant and work with the defensive backs after spending last season at Dillon High School working as the offensive assistant. At Dillon he coached the wide receivers while working for his former high school coach, Jackie Hayes. The Wildcats reached the championship game of the state playoffs and ended the year with a 14-1 record in 2011. While also at Dillon he worked as the physical education for 7th and 8th grades, coordinated the Rosetta Stone Programs for English for Speakers of Other Languages and coached the Junior Varsity Basketball Team.
Prior to working at Dillon High School, McLaurin worked for Dillon Christian School in Dillon, S.C. from 2008-10 as the Athletic Director. While at Dillon Christian School his coaching responsibilities included being assistant varsity football coach, the offensive coordinator and wide receivers coach, head basketball coach and head golf coach. The football team won two state championships and had a combined record 24-2 during his tenure. During his time at Dillon Christian School he also spent time as the director of the physical education program for grades 1-9.
McLaurin played college football at Clemson from 2003-05 as a walk-on receiver. He received a letter in 2005 on a team that defeated Colorado in the Champs Sports Bowl. He was part of the 2004 team that finished 9-4 and defeated Tennessee in the Chick-Fil-A-Bowl. His position coach at Clemson was Dabo Swinney, who is the current head coach of the Tigers.
The Dillon, S.C. native earned his bachelor's degree in sociology and minor in communications studies in 2006.
He is enrolled in graduate school at Campbell and resides in Buies Creek, N.C. McLaurin is replacing former Campbell coach Donnell Washington.
"We are excited to have Duncan join the coaching staff this season," Steele explained. "Having played collegiately at Clemson he has experience as a student-athlete. He is also a fine young man that comes out of a very strong high school program in South Carolina that won a few state championships while he was working with them. He is a winner. He understands the work ethic needed to develop a winning program and attitude. Duncan has come in and done a great job of fitting in really well with the rest of our staff and is an important addition to what we were already doing and building towards."
Phillippi makes the transition from the playing field to the coaching staff this season and enters his first year as a defensive assistant as the outside linebackers coach. Phillippi is no stranger to Campbell fans having played on CU's team from 2008-10 as a linebacker and special teams player. He earned letters in his last two seasons. Phillippi began his transition to the coaching world while still play at Campbell and worked Dabo Swinney's Football Camp as a volunteer coach at Clemson last season. He also has worked at Pender County High School as a volunteer coach and camp organizer. In 2011, Phillippi worked at the University of Tennessee, Clemson and Naval Academy football camps as a paid coach.
The Charlotte, N.C. native graduated from Campbell in the spring of 2011 and worked as undergraduate assistant coach with the linebacker for CU while finishing up his classroom work in exercise sports science in the spring semester.
Phillippi earned the Fellowship of Christian Athletes Award as a senior and served as the organization's President at Campbell his final year.
Phillippi resides in Fuquay-Varina and will serve as the defensive graduate assistant coach with the outside linebackers this season.
"One of the things that you hope happens when you begin to build and coach a program is that young people who graduated from your program will want to stay on and become part of the staff," Steele stated. "The fact that Will was here when we started the program and he then wanted to begin his coaching career here speaks well to what we are developing. We are always going to do our best to offer opportunities to our young people that played on our football team to continue to be part of the football program upon graduating. We are excited that Will is with us. He knows the system and how things happen around here. It is important to him because it is his school plus he brings a lot of knowledge about everything we do and how we do it."
McLaurin and Phillippi join Art Link, Oscar Olejniczak, Greg Williams, Landon Mariani, Nick Cavallo, Andre Fontenette and Chris Chestnut on the Campbell coaching staff.
"We are thrilled to be bringing everybody back," Steele explained. "Anytime that you can have the continuity that we have with four coaches having been here since we started playing it really helps with all aspects of the program. It aids the players quite a bit to have coaches that have been here for a while. The fact that this coaching staff has been together for entire graduating class also means we don't have to spend as much time teaching the coaches the way the program is run. We are able to spend more time teaching the players and that is what we are here to do. This is a great coaching staff. They have done a terrific job of bringing this football team along and we are excited that they are all back for another season."
