CHARLOTTE, N.C. – Evan James scored once and assisted on the other goal to lead 14th-ranked Charlotte over Campbell 2-0 in men's soccer action Saturday night.
The 49ers (7-1) won their fifth-straight game on the strength of goals in each half and keeper Klay Davis' fourth shutout of the year.
Campbell (3-4-1) dropped its fourth-straight match since opening the year 3-0-1, and lost its third by shutout.
Saturday's match was CU's second against a nationally-ranked squad this season, including a 0-0 season-opening draw with No.-30 Furman. Since the start of the 2005 season, Campbell stands 4-11-1 against nationally-ranked teams.
In Campbell's two previous losses, the Camels out-shot Loyola and Davidson by a combined 44-13 only to suffer 1-0 setbacks. On Saturday, however, the 49ers matched their two-goals-per game average on the year and took the lead in the 19th minute.
James set up Guiseppe Gentile for his first goal of the season. The 49ers nearly added two more goals in the opening period when Gentile (22nd minute) and Darby Owen (35th) hit the woodwork.
Charlotte led 1-0 at the break thanks to a 13-4 edge in shots. Campbell did not have a shot on target until Jhuvon Francis forced Davis to make his first of three saves on the night.
James netted his team-leading 4th goal of the season in the 68th minute off Will Mayhew's assist.
The 49ers finished with a 20-7 edge in shots, 7-3 in shots on target. Ryan Amons finished with five saves in the Campbell nets.
The Camels open Big South Conference action Wednesday at home in a 7:00 p.m., kick-off against Radford.
