BUIES CREEK, N.C. -- Kaylin Yost tops the individual leader board and Campbell owns a 2-stroke lead in the team standings after 36 holes Monday of the Fighting Camel Fall Classic at Keith Hills Country Club.
Yost produced a tournament 36-hole record of 142 (73-69) after her six-birdie second round Monday afternoon on the par-72, 6026-yard Keith Hills layout. Her score topped a 143 (73-70) turned in by Mary Mattson in the 2010 event.
A junior from Fort Lauderdale, Fla., Yost owns a two-stroke lead over Longwood's Amanda Steinhagen (74-71--145) in the 65-player field. Yost and Gemma Fuster of Old Dominion each made 8 birdies over the first 36 holes to top the field.
The 2012 Big South Conference player of the year, Yost's second round 69 was just two strokes off the tournament record 67 produced by last year's medalist Amy Anderson of North Dakota State. Yost was not only the sole player in the field to finish the first two rounds under par, but was also the lone competitor to play the par-4 holes in red numbers (-1).
With six players among the top 20 individuals, Campbell (294-298--592) took a two-stroke advantage over Old Dominion (297-297--594) in the 12-school event. Longwood (309-296--605) is third.
ODU teammates Elizabeth Haycock and Samantha Morrell are tied for third after identical 72-75--147 rounds. Kimberley Bradbury of ODU is fifth (76-72--148).
Campbell sophomore Brooke Bellomy is tied for ninth (77-74--151) and leads the field with 29 pars over 36 holes. Junior Maria Jose Benavides is locked in a tie for 12th with teammates Lisbeth Brooks (72-81--153) and Tahnia Ravnjak (72-81--153). Teresa Urquizu is tied for 17th (80-74--154), while sophomore Babette Lemberger is tied for 43rd (83-79--162).
The Camels are seeking their 14th Fighting Camel Classic title in the event, which has been staged 18 times on their home course. Campbell has claimed the last four team championships in the tourney, including a 21-stroke victory over Illinois last fall.
Tuesday's final round begins with a 9:00 a.m. shotgun start. Live scoring is available on-line at Golfstat.com.
