Camels Add Four to Early Signing Class

BUIES CREEK, N.C. – Campbell added to its early signing class, counting Anthony Penas (Miami, Fla. / Westwood Christian), Mason Crenshaw (Red Oak, Okla. / Carl Albert JC), Steven Leonard (Monument, Colo. / Iowa Western CC) and Landon Tilley to the Camels' 2014 baseball team.

"This group of four features two arms that will both have the opportunity to log significant innings, and two position players that we will be counting on to fill some major roles for us from the day they step on campus," said Campbell head baseball coach Greg Goff. "Another four quality character guys that are going to have great careers here at Campbell."

Anthony Penas (INF | 6-1 | 185 | Miami, Fla. | Westwood Christian)
Anthony Penas, a 6-foot-1 infielder from Miami, Fla., hit .477 with five home runs, 20 RBI, 20 runs scored and a .602 on-base percentage last season for Westwood Christian and head coach Luis Padron. A two-time All-Broward County selection, Penas led Westwood to a 2012 Regional Championship and a 2A Florida State runner-up finish.

The infielder has also been tabbed a National High Follow by Perfect Game and is an Honor Roll student.

"I am coming to Campbell because the atmosphere and the coaching environment is a perfect fit for a student-athlete like me," said Penas.

"AP is a young man that we have watched over the last couple of years, who has continued to get better every time we've seen him," said Goff. "If you ask anyone in south Florida about him they will all tell you one thing: he can flat out hit. He is a special young man, who is a great student, and will have a chance to be a future great in our program."

Mason Crenshaw (RHP | 5-11 | 190 | Red Oak, Okla. | Carl Albert JC)
Mason Crenshaw, a 5-foot-11 right-handed pitcher from Red Oak, Okla., comes to Buies Creek from Carl Albert Junior College (Okla.). Crenshaw posted a 5-5 record last season with 63 strikeouts (23 walks) in 70 innings spread over 13 games.

Crenshaw is a former Oklahoma 1A All-State selection, State All-Star Game MVP and State Champion.

"I chose Campbell because it has nice facilities, nice people, and great coaches," said Crenshaw. "It is a great opportunity for me and my family."

"Mason has one of the strongest arms in this class, and will be counted on to come in and provide an immediate impact for our pitching staff," added Goff. "He is an athletic, slightly undersized kid with a strong arm, and good feel for the slider. He is also ultra-competitive, and a hardworking kid from great family, and we can't wait for him to get to campus."

Steven Leonard (C\OF | 5-10 | 190 | Monument, Colo. | Iowa Western CC)
Another Iowa Western Community College product, catcher and outfielder Steven Leonard, also helped IWCC to a NJCAA National Championship and a 62-6 overall record in 2012. Leonard hit .414 with 13 doubles and 25 RBI, striking out in only five of 128 at-bats as a freshman. Coached by Marc Rardin, the IWCC May 2012 Scholar-Athlete of the Month and Perfect Game National High Follow carried a .448 on-base percentage.

I feel that coming to Campbell can help me grow as a player and a person," said Leonard. "I also look forward to the opportunity to help this program make a run at getting to Omaha."

"When we look for catchers in our program, we look for leadership qualities, and guys that we think are going to be warriors for us, and we think Steven is one of those guys," said Goff. "He is athletic receiver with a great arm, and with his foot speed he will fit well into our offensive system.  He will be a great addition to our program."

Landon Tilley (RHP | 6-1 | 210 | Shallotte, N.C. | West Brunswick HS)
Landon Tilley, a Shallotte, N.C. product, posted a 12-4 career high school record for head coach Mike Alderson at West Brunswick, where current Camel Jesse Simmons also enjoyed a standout prep career. The 6-foot-1 right handed pitcher was a two-time all-conference selection and named to the National Top 1,000 list by Perfect Game.

Tilley, who played for the Carolina Cubs and the prestigious Houston Banditos during the summer and fall, was also a NC State Games Participant.

"I chose to sign with Campbell because of the instant hospitality and welcome feeling that I had the first day that I stepped on campus and met the coaching staff," said Tilley.

"Landon is another great representation of what a student-athlete at Campbell is all about," said Goff. "He is an honor roll student, and a very good pitcher. He will fit well here both academically and athletically.  We feel that with his ability to throw three or four quality pitches already, he will have an opportunity to get on the mound very early in his career."

The quartet joins Tyler Aiken (Georgetown, Del. / Sussex Central HS), Brooks Borders (Columbia, S.C. / Hammond HS), James Darcy (Langwarrin South, Victoria, Australia / Iowa Western CC), Danny Pardo (Pembroke Pines, Fla. / West Broward HS) in the early signing class, with more to follow.
