Cardenas named Big South attacking player of the week

BUIES CREEK, N.C. -- One day after earning the fourth all-conference honor of his career, Mitchell Cardenas of Campbell University has been named Big South men's soccer attacking player of the week.

The senior from Mexico City scored the game winner and set up Campbell's second goal in last Saturday's win at Gardner-Webb.

On Monday, Cardenas was named to the College Soccer News national team of the week and to the Big South all-conference first team.

The fourth-seeded Camels host fifth seed High Point Tuesday at 7 p.m. in the Big South Championship quarterfinal round. The winner of Tuesday's match will advance to Friday's 4:00 p.m. semifinal at Bryan Park in Greensboro, N.C.

On the year, Cardenas leads the Big South Conference and ranks 3rd nationally with 12 assists. He stands second in the league with 28 points (8 goals) and with 4 game-winning goals.

Cardenas has played every minute for Campbell (12-5-1, 7-3-0 Big South) this season and has at least one point in 13 of the team's 18 matches.

On Saturday, Cardenas moved into a tie with Juha Miettinen (1987-90) for seventh place on Campbell's all-time assists list. He now has 76 points on 22 goals and 32 assists in 75 career matches and rates 15th on the school's all-time points list.

Cardenas' selection marks the third time a Campbell player has received a weekly honor from the conference during the 2012 campaign.  Ethan Hall was named defensive player of the week on Aug. 28, while Ricki Gaez was named attacking player of the week Oct. 23.
