Baseball First Pitch Dinner Set for Jan. 12

BUIES CREEK, N.C. – Campbell's fifth annual First Pitch Dinner is scheduled for January 12, 2013 at 6 p.m. head baseball coach Greg Goff announced today.

Legendary Mississippi State coach and College Baseball Hall of Fame member Ron Polk will serve as special guest speaker for the night.

Campbell's 2013 baseball team and staff will also be introduced at the event to be held at McCall Court inside the John W. Pope Jr. Convocation Center.

"I am excited about this year's First Pitch Dinner," said Goff. "This again will be a great night for our program with Coach Ron Polk as our keynote speaker. We're looking forward to a great event."

Ron Polk was a long-time head baseball coach at Mississippi State and is considered the "Father of SEC Baseball". He is the winningest coach in school and SEC history in all sports. In 28 seasons as head baseball coach, Polk compiled an 1139-590-2 (.667) record. His career record stands at 1373-702-2.

He currently ranks eighth on the all-time wins list, and ranks fifth in terms of victories among active coaches. His teams have won five SEC championships, including four SEC tournament championships. His teams have made it to the NCAA tournament 23 times, and have reached the College World Series eight times.

On March 24, 2009, Polk, along with former Mississippi State player, Rafael Palmeiro, was elected to College Baseball's Hall of Fame.

The Camels open the 2013 season on Friday, Feb. 15, hosting Eastern Michigan at the new Jim Perry Stadium.

The Fighting Camels broke 10 single season team records in 2012, including a program-best 41 overall wins. Campbell also produced several new program highs with games played (59), at-bats (2038) and sacrifice hits (60), finishing 2012 with a national top-10 team ranking in batting average, runs scored, hits, stolen bases, on base percentage and hit by pitch.

Campbell's return to the Big South Conference was highlighted by the club leading the league in hitting with a .314 batting average en route to a 15-9 second place regular season finish. The Camels also boasted a 23-3 start and an 18-game winning streak, both marking the best in CU program history.
