CORAL GABLES, FLA. – Brooke Bellomy is the individual leader and Campbell is 5th in the team standings following 36 holes Monday of the Hurricane Invitational intercollegiate women's golf tournament at Deering By Yacht and Country Club.
A freshman from Ona, W.Va., Bellomy (70-74--144) holds a two-stroke lead over Amy Meier of Ohio State (74-72--146) on the par-71, 6017-yard Deering Bay layout heading into Tuesday's final round.
Competing as an individual (and not counting toward Campbell's team score), Bellomy fired a collegiate career-low, one-under par 70 in the opening round. She then birdied two of her last 3 holes in the afternoon round, despite playing in windy conditions that included gusts of more than 20 miles per hour.
Charlotte Lorentzen of Georgia State, Ginger Mak of James Madison and Rika Park of host Miami are locked in a 3-way tie at five-over 147.
Miami (306-291--597) leads the 16-school event by eight strokes over 16th-ranked Ohio State (308-297--605). Kennesaw State (300-310--610) and Georgia State (305-305--610) are tied for third, nine strokes in front of Campbell (313-306--619). Michigan (314-306--620) is in sixth place.
Campbell sophomore Kaylin Yost shot a one-over-par 72 Monday afternoon to move up to a tie for 8th place in the 86-player field at eight-over 150 (78-72). Senior Michelle Koh is tied for 12th place (75-77--152).
Sophomore Maria Jose Benavides (82-77--159) and freshman Lisbeth Brooks (79-80--159) are tied for 43rd, while junior Teresa Urquizu is tied for 55th (81-81--162).
The 54-hole event concludes Tuesday with an 8:00 a.m. shotgun start. Live scoring is available on-line at Golfstat.com.
