Charlotte, N.C. – Adrien Rossignon has been named the 2012 Big South Freshman of the Year the conference announced Wednesday. Fernando Guillen has been honored as the top singles player in the two position, while David Clavera was named to the Big South All-Academic Team.
Rossignon finished the season tied with a team best 14-6 singles record, and a 5-2 record in Big South conference play while playing primarily in the one spot. The Arlon, Belgium native was also 3-2 against nationally ranked opponents this season.
Rossignon knocked off #47 Max Wennakoski of VCU in only his second match as a Camel on January 20 to become the first freshman at Campbell to knock off a nationally ranked opponent. He also defeated #80 Francisco Dias of George Washington on March 17, and #88 Rafael Aita of UNC Wilmington on March 28.
Rossignon was also named Big South Freshman of the Week on January 25, and won the A2 singles championship at the UNC Greensboro Spartan Invitational in the fall season. He was also ranked #125 in the February 18 ITA National Rankings.
In doubles play, Rossignon and partner Josep Baro finished the season at 8-10 and 3-4 in the BSC playing in the one spot. This is the second year in a row that a Camel has been named conference freshman of the year, and the ninth year in a row that a Camel has been named to the conference all-freshman team.
Guillen was named the flight two champion following a 14-6 singles record, and a 5-2 record in Big South conference play playing primarily in the two spot. The San Louis Potisi, Mexico native also won the flight A singles championship at the Davidson Invitational in the fall season.
In doubles play, Guillen and partner Clavera finished the regular season with a team best 11-7 overall record and 5-2 record in conference play. The duo also won the flight A doubles championship at the UNC Greensboro Spartan Invitational.
Fourth seeded Campbell will take on fifth seeded Winthrop Thursday, April 19 in the Big South Championships quarterfinals. Match time is set for 10:30 am.
