Campbell finishes 10th, Koh misses national berth in play-off, at NCAA East Regional

STATE COLLEGE, PA. -- Campbell University produced its second-best ever team showing in post-season play and Michelle Koh narrowly missed a chance to advance to the national finals Saturday following the final round of the NCAA East Regional women's golf championship.

The Camels produced their season-low round for the second-straight day and placed 10th in the 24-team field. A senior from Kuantan, Malaysia, Koh tied with Margarita Ramos of Arizona for 10th on the individual leader board at 2-over-par 218.

However, Koh made bogey on the first play-off hole and Ramos will join Kelsey Vines of Oklahoma State (73-75-69--217) in the NCAA Championships, May 22-25 at Franklin, Tenn.

Campbell shot 2-over-par 290 on the par-72, 6352-yard Penn State Blue Course lay-out for the second-straight day, but fell just six strokes shy of earning one of the eight team bids to the NCAA finals.

South Carolina (288-294-291--873) claimed the team title, five strokes ahead of Texas A&M (296-296-286--878) and Texas (296-300-282--878). Alabama (292-297-290--879) and Florida (294-297-288--879) tied for fourth.

Arizona State (303-298-286--887), Michigan State (300-304-283--887) and Duke (302-293-292--887) tied for sixth to secure the final three berths to the national tourney.

Arizona (302-296-293--891) was ninth, two strokes in front of Campbell (313-290-290--893). The Big South champion Camels finished two strokes ahead of Oklahoma State (299-308-289--896) and also placed ahead of ACC members Wake Forest (T14) and Maryland (17).

Katerina Ruzickova of Texas A&M won the individual medal at 3-under 213 (67-73-73). Runner-up Jennifer Kirby of Alabama (71-74-70--215) was the only other golfer in the field to finish in red numbers.

Campbell's 10th-place finish is its second-best in 15 NCAA regional trips. Only the 1997 squad, which advanced to the NCAA Championship, has produced a better regional showing (5th) in CU women's golf history.

Koh's round Saturday included four birdies, giving her nine for the 54-hole event, tied for 8th-most in the 125-player field. She produced the fourth-best result (one-over) on the par-4 holes, while setting a school NCAA regional 54-hole record (78-69-71--218).

The 10th-place individual showing for Koh stands as the 3rd-best finish for CU golfers in NCAA play behind Kylie Pratt (T2nd in 1997) and Sharon O'Neill (T5th in 2000). One day after tying the school-record 18-hole score (69) in NCAA play, Koh produced a one-under-par 71, which is tied for the 5th-best post-season round in CU history.

Junior Teresa Urquizu of San Sebastian, Spain shot a 2-under-par 70 on Saturday to tie for the 3rd-best round in CU NCAA play. Her day included six birdies to run her tournament total to 9 in the 3-day event. Urquizu tied for 41st place at 8-over 224 (73-81-70).

Big South player of the year Kaylin Yost tied for 51st place at 10-over 226 (80-71-75), while league freshman of the year Lisbeth Brooks tied for 72nd (82-73-74--229). Brooke Bellomy finished 100th (83-77-76--236).
