PACIFIC PALISADES, CALIF. -- Vaita Guillaume of Campbell University shot a four-over-par 75 in Tuesday's first round of the NCAA men's golf medal play championship at Riviera Country Club. He stands 8 shots behind leader Anton Arboleda (67) of UCLA.
Entering Wednesday's second round of the 54-hole event, Guillaume is tied for 81st place in the 156-golfer field. The Big South men's golfer of the year is the first Campbell player to ever participate in the NCAA men's golf championship.
Guillaume finished in a 3-way tie for individual medalist honors at the NCAA Greensboro Regional, then won a one-hole playoff to earn one of six individual berths to the national tourney.
A senior from Papeete, Tahiti, Guillaume opened his day with an eagle on the par-five first hole. He birdied the par-four eighth and made the turn at plus-one 36. He was three-over on the back nine of the par-71, 7292-yard Riviera layout.
Big South Conference team champion Liberty is tied for 15th in the 30-school field at 11-over 295. Alabama (285) is the team leader, four strokes ahead of Florida and Auburn.
