BUIES CREEK, N.C. -- For the third-straight year, Josh Holskey of Campbell University has been named to the Capitol One/Academic All-District 3 University Division Baseball first-team by the College Sports Information Directors of America (CoSIDA).
Chosen as the first-team designated hitter, Holskey was one of three players from Big South Conference schools named to the 11-man unit. A senior from Roanoke, Va., Holskey was joined on the unit by pitcher Jason Patten of Radford and infielder Dusty Quattlebaum of Gardner-Webb.
Holskey's selection marks the 13th time a Campbell player has been so honored by the collegiate publicists organization. "We are very proud of Josh and the four years he's had at Campbell," CU head coach Greg Goff said. "He's a great player, but he's been an even better student-athlete and really exemplifies all of the qualities and characteristics that we like for a Camel baseball player to have. Josh is quite deserving to receive this honor once again."
CoSIDA's 1800 members in the United States and Canada nominate players for Capital One/Academic All-America recognition. To be eligible, a student-athlete must be at least a sophomore in academic standing, have at least a 3.30 cumulative grade-point average and be a starter or key reserve on his team.
Holskey, who owns a 3.92 grade-point average as a kinesiology major, made 13 starts early in the season before suffering a wrist injury. He returned to action last weekend in Campbell's series at Lipscomb. In 14 games this year, the former Lord Botetourt High School standout is batting .317 with 5 doubles, 1 home run and 8 RBI.
His clutch hitting helped Campbell get off to the best start (23-3) in school history and record a school-record 18-game win streak. After tying the school single-season wins record last weekend, Campbell (33-12, 9-6) returns to action Saturday in a 3-game Big South series at 24th-ranked Coastal Carolina.
A three-time Atlantic Sun All-Academic Team member, Holskey earned Campbell's Easley Senior GPA Award as the graduating student-athlete with the highest cumulative grade-point average. He was salutatorian of the 2008 Lord Botetourt High School graduating class.
CoSIDA members vote on all-district teams, then a national panel selects the Academic All-America squads from all first-team all-district choices. District 3 includes all NCAA Division I schools in Florida, Georgia, North Carolina, South Carolina and Virginia.
