BUIES CREEK, N.C. – Campbell University head coach Phil Schuman has announced the inaugural women's lacrosse recruiting class.  The 11-member group will enroll at CU this fall in preparation for the program's first season, which starts in Feb. 2013.

"We are pleased to announce our first class of women's lacrosse players, the Class of 2016, at Campbell University!  If you had asked me back in November if we could put together such a talented class, in such short order, I would have said no," said Schuman. "These student-athletes have accepted the challenge of building the foundation of a new program and we are excited to have them on campus. We are bringing in the best junior college goalie in the country, another junior college All-American, and some talented high school seniors from up and down the east coast."

"We are excited to announce the addition of 4 more student athletes later this summer; as well as our Class of 2017 next fall," said Schuman. "Go Camels!"

In April 2011, the Campbell University Board of Trustees voted on and approved the addition of women's lacrosse as the 21st sport in CU's Division I athletics program.  Coach Schuman spent the 2011-12 academic year recruiting student-athletes and preparing for the program's first varsity season in the spring of 2013.

The Big South Conference will have eight members to participate in women's lacrosse during the 2013 season – Campbell, Coastal Carolina, Davidson (associate), High Point, Liberty, Longwood, Presbyterian and Winthrop.

With eight members, the Big South is immediately eligible to apply for an automatic bid to the NCAA Women's Lacrosse Championship.  The Big South is in the process of determining scheduling, championship format and award recognitions, among others, leading up to the inaugural 2013 campaign.
