BUIES CREEK, N.C. – Future Campbell softball player Courtney Roberts was named the ESPNHS Southeast Softball Player of the Week on Thursday, May 24.
Roberts (Simpsonville, S.C.), a current senior at Hillcrest High, took home the national honors after pitching a two-hit shutout with eight strikeouts and no walks in the final championship game of the South Carolina AAAA State Playoffs. Her final pitching performance of the week came in a 6-0 victory over Carolina Forest (Myrtle Beach, S.C.). The win was the second consecutive win for Hillcrest and earned the softball team the state championship. Roberts also drove in the first run of the game with a double. Earlier during Hillcrest's postseason run, Roberts pitched a perfect game against Mauldin (S.C.) and a two-hit shutout over Boiling Springs (S.C.). She did all of this in the aftermath of the sudden death of her father, Paul, who suffered a fatal heart attack on April 9.
ESPNHS selects national players of the week from each of the four regions of the country. Each player chosen can only be chosen once in a given season.
