SPARTANBURG, S.C. – Freshman Eric Montoya was named the Southern Conference wrestler of the week Wednesday for the week of Jan. 9-15. The selection is made by the league office.
Montoya went 3-0 this week, including two SoCon victories. He also moved up the WrestlingReport.com poll to No. 28 at 125 pounds, two spots up from last week.
"It's good to see Montoya get some recognition," head coach Joe Boardwine said. "He is very focused and has been super consistent in his training from day one. If he continues with this approach, I think he can go a long way in this sport."
The freshman won his first SoCon match Jan. 9 against VMI's Armando Herrero with a 4:45 pin, his sixth of the season. Later that night, he grabbed his second win with a 5-4 decision over North Carolina State's Joe DeAngelo.
Earning his third victory of the week, Montoya posted an 8-5 decision over Appalachian State's Dominic Parisi Tuesday. It was Parisi's first dual loss of the season, and his first loss since Montoya defeated him at the Southern Scuffle Jan. 1.
The award is Montoya's first and the first for a Campbell wrestler this season.
Campbell (2-5, 1-1 SoCon) returns to action Jan. 23 at The Citadel (2-3, 1-0 SoCon) for a 7 p.m. match in Charleston, S.C.
