CU wins Fighting Camel Fall Classic, Yost shares individual crown

BUIES CREEK, N.C. – With all five golfers among the top 11 individuals, Campbell won its Fighting Camel Fall Classic for a sixth-straight time Tuesday at Keith Hills Country Club.

Kaylin Yost shared individual medalist honors and Campbell set a tournament 54-hole record by finishing at 23-over-par 887 to claim a 10-stroke victory over runner-up Old Dominion in the 11-school field.

A senior from Fort Lauderdale, Fla., Yost defended her 2012 FCFC crown by shooting 73-75-73—221 for her third collegiate individual title.  Mary Alice Murphy of Mercer (79-73-69—221) and Elizabeth Haycock of Old Dominion (73-75-73—221) also finished at 5-over-par and multiple individual medalists were declared for the first time since 2008 when tri-champions were crowned in a rain-shortened event.

Yost became the fourth Campbell player to win her school's invitational, joining Mara Larrauri (1997, 1998), Laura Torrisi (2000, 2001) and Maite Ortiz de Pinedo (2007, 2008).  Yost finished the 54-hole event with a tournament-leading 41 pars.  She played the par-3 holes at 1-under, was 5-over on the par-4s and 1-over on the par-5 holes.

Junior Lisbeth Brooks finished in fourth place (78-70-74—222), one stroke off the individual lead, while junior Ali Prazak (76-74-75) and sophomore Tahnia Ravnjak (80-71-74) tied for eighth at 9-over 225.  Freshman Louise Latorre tied for 11th at 10-over 226 on the par-72, 6026-yard Keith Hills layout.

Campbell won its home tournament for the 15th time in 19 years and for the 13th time in the last 14 occasions the event has been held.  Only Georgetown (2006) has claimed a team championship other than the Camels on Campbell's home course since 1996.

The victory was Campbell's third of the fall season and the 73rd in the 23-year coaching career of John Crooks, who stands second among all active NCAA Division I women's golf coaches in tournament wins.  Earlier this fall, Campbell won the Golfweek Program Challenge for the third-straight year before claiming The Patriot Intercollegiate/Big South Preview.

Campbell overtook first-round leader ODU on Monday afternoon by shoot a tournament 18-hole record 2-over-par 290.  On Tuesday, all five Camel starters shot between 73 and 75.

Mercer (907) finished third in the team standings, followed by Western Carolina (909), High Point (918) and Iowa (919).

Brooks led the 59-player field by shooting 3-over on the par-4 holes and made 38 pars.  Prazak and Ravnjak led the tournament with 10 birdies each.  Ravnjak was 4-under on the par-5s, best in the field, and played the par-3 holes at 1-under.  Latorre made 39 pars and finished 1-under on the par-3 holes.

Only four players turned in below-par scores during the tournament.  Murphy's final-round 69 tied Yost's mark for second-lowest 18-hole score in the tournament's history behind the 67 logged by 2011 champion Amy Anderson of North Dakota State.  Murphy was the lone golfer to shoot in red numbers Tuesday.

Campbell broke its own tournament 54-hole record by 11 strokes, set by the 2012 squad.  Campbell returns to action Feb. 9-11 at the UCF Challenge in Orlando, Fla.
