BUIES CREEK, N.C. -- Campbell jumped out to a 32-5 lead following a 20-0 run and never trailed Saturday night in an 82-56 victory over Erskine at Gore Arena/John W. Pope Jr. Convocation Center. Head coach Wanda Watkins tallied her 499th career victory against the Flying Fleet
"It was a very good start by our team," said head coach Wanda Watkins. "We were able to go deep into our bench and maintain that momentum. We do need to improve our consistency and bring the same sense of urgency that we started with for the entire game."
Sophomore guard Kiera Gaines (Mechanicsville, Va.) posted a double-double with 11 points and 10 rebounds, while senior forward Ashley James (Round Rock, Texas) scored 13 points to lead the Lady Camels (1-0).
Erskine was led by Raygon Hendrix with a game-high 14 points and five assists and Jana Dixon with a double-double of 12 points and 14 boards. This was the second exhibition of the season for the Flying Fleet.
"It is always nice when everyone gets an opportunity to get into the flow of the game," said coach Watkins. "Our players went in and played really hard. With the number of substitutions that we had, we did not necessary have good chemistry throughout the game, but we know that is something that we will continue to build during the season."
Thirteen players entered the contest and grabbed at least one rebound for the Lady Camels as teh bench accounted for 36 points. Campbell controlled the boards, 54-to-39, while both teams recorded 19 offensive rebounds. Pulling down seven boards each were senior guard Jessica Moore (Jacksboro, Tenn.) and D Brown.
The Lady Camels compiled a 49.2 overall shooting pct., but were just 4-of-15 from three-point range. D Brown drilled two of the treys. Erskine was held to 30.3 pct. from the floor and made six second half three pointers.
Junior forward Roslyn Presley (Petersburg, Va.) shot 5-of-8 from the charity stripe and totaled 11 points.
Three player delivered nine points including new comers junior guard D Janelle Brown (Oklahoma City, Okla.) and freshman forward Amanda Coffer (Summerfield, N.C.) along with sophomore guard Jessica Pone (High Point, N.C.). Senior forward Heather Beadle (Austin, Texas) registered eight points.
Campbell totaled 25 assists during the contest with sophomore guard RaeChaun Edwards (Spring Grove, Va.) pacing the squad with five. Four assists each were tallied by junior guard Casey Elliott (Wilson, N.C.), Gaines and Presley.
Both teams forced 11 steals, but Campbell scored following each of those mistakes.
Following the 20-0 run for the Lady Camels that was fueled by points in transition, the largest lead of the contest, 36-7, came on a made shot from the charity stripe by D Brown with 6:33 left in the first half.
A pair of made jumpers by the Flying Fleet from Adrienne Bannerman and Dixon cut the Campbell advantage to 19 points, 45-26. It was the only time in the second half that the lead was under 20 points.
Freshman forward Qua Brown (Hampton, Va.) made her Campbell debut with two assists and one rebound, while sophomore Jewell Yarborough (Creedmoor, N.C.) made a free throw in the season opener.
Campbell travels to ACC-foe Wake Forest on Wednesday for a 7 p.m. tipoff at Joel Coliseum. The Camels return home on Saturday to face Western Carolina with the contest set to begin at 7 p.m. inside Gore Arena/John W. Pope Jr. Convocation Center.
