BUIES CREEK, N.C. – Sophomore guard RaeChaun Edwards (Spring Grove, Va.) poured in a career-best 20 points on 11-of-12 from the charity stripe and 4-of-10 from the field in leading Campbell to a 67-59 victory over UNC Asheville on Wednesday at Gore Arena/John W. Pope Jr. Convocation Center.
Double-digit scoring games were added by seniors Jessica Moore (Jacksboro, Tenn.) and Roslyn Presley (Petersburg, Va.) with 15 and 11 points, respectively. Moore came one rebound away from her first-career double-double, setting a personal best with nine.
Campbell (5-2, 2-0 Big South) was held to 30.0 pct. from the field, while Asheville (4-5, 1-1 Big South) was slightly better at 31.1 pct. There were 48 fouls called and 62 free throws shot in the game, slowing the offensive rhythm for both teams.
The 32-of-41 performance from the free throw line for Campbell was the difference as it attempted the most free throws since going 32-of-44 against Asheville (11/21/06). Edwards (11), Moore (7) and junior guard Kiera Gaines (5) made at least five free throws for the Lady Camels.
For the first time this year, the Lady Camels picked up the victory, despite losing the battle of the boards, 44-43. Asheville grabbed a game-high 18 offensive rebounds, scoring 19 second-chance points.
Finishing with six rebounds, five points, four assists and three steals was Gaines, who was held without a made field goal for the first time since March 12, 2012 against Charleston Southern. Senior forward Ashley James (Round Rock, Texas) contributed eight points and eight rebounds.
Edwards made an impact in every facet of the game by adding five assists and two steals to her 20 points and nine rebounds.
Brittany Gwyn (14), Paige Love (12) and Tianna Knuckles (10) paced the Asheville offense. A team-high eight-rebound performance was registered by Leah Wormack, while Ja'Da Brayboy notched five of the 10 steals for the Bulldogs.
Campbell opened the game on 13-5 run capped by a three from freshman guard Amanda Coffer (Raleigh, N.C.), who added three blocks and four rebounds. Moore nailed a trey with 8:44 remaining in the half to put the Lady Camels on top by 13 points, 22-9, the largest lead of the game.
Foul trouble for Campbell sat a trio of starters and opened the door for Asheville to go on a 19-6 run, tying the contest at 28. A three-point field goal for Edwards on the next possession with 1:32 on the clock was first jumper for her team in over a seven minute gap.
The Lady Camels possessed a 35-30 advantage at the break due to shooting 14-of-19 from the charity stripe.
Asheville opened the second half on a 12-4 run to take its only of the game 42-39 at 15:22 as Gwyn, Love and Jones made jumpers. A three pointer by junior guard D Janelle Brown (Oklahoma City, Okla.) put the Lady Camels back on top and a coast-to-coast layup by Edwards extended the advantage to 46-42.
After the Bulldogs knotted the contest at 50 with 9:24 left, Campbell scored the next nine points on a three by Moore and six free made throws.
A layup from Moore that put the team ahead 61-52 with 3:09 left. It was the last made field goal for the Lady Camels, who closed the game by going 6-for-6 on the free throw line.
Asheville held the Lady Camels to a season-worst 22.2 pct. from the field (6-25) in the second half. Campbell alleviated the shooting performance by posting an 18-of-22 mark from the charity stripe in the frame.
The Lady Camels head to North Carolina Central on Monday for a 6 p.m. start in Durham. Campbell returns home on Dec. 18 to host UVA-Wise at 7 p.m.
