ATHENS, Ga. – The Campbell softball team softball team scored two runs on three hits, but was unable to solve Northwestern pitcher Amy Letourneau, who registered 15 strikeouts, in a 6-2 loss on Saturday afternoon at Jack Turner Stadium in the Georgia Classic.
Junior designated player Olivia Scarborough (Buies Creek, N.C.) blasted her second home run of the campaign and went 2-for-3, while sophomore shortstop Ericka Nesbitt (Salisbury, N.C.) extended a 17-game hitting streak in the sixth with an RBI single up the middle.
In the circle for Campbell, freshman Courtney Roberts (Simpsonville, S.C.) pitched the first four frames and struck out five. Tossing the final two innings was Scarborough, who tallied two strikeouts and yielded just one hit.
Northwestern was led by Kristin Scharkey and Mari Majamthe at the top of the order went 4-for-7 at the plate with five RBI. Andrea DiPrima and Letourneau also notched multi-hit games.
The Wildcats struck first in the bottom of the second as two singles and a two-out walk loaded the bases. Back-to-back base knocks by Scharkey and Majam provided Northwestern with a 2-0 advantage.
Leading off the third for Campbell was Scarborough, who crushed a 0-2 pitch that cleared the wall in left center, 3-1.
Each team went quietly until the fourth when Northwestern took a 5-1 lead following a two-out triple and double by Scharkey and Majam. Brianna LeBeau started the threat by beating out an infield single to short.
For the second time in the contest, Scarborough began a frame with a hit, this time a single to left in the fifth. Pinch runner Kerstine Womack (Broadway, N.C.) stole second and eventually scored on a Nesbitt two-out single up the middle, 5-2.
During the bottom-half, Northwestern responded with a leadoff double by Edwards to chase Roberts from the circle. The new hurler, Scarborough, came in and notched two quick outs before Letouneau singled to extend the Wildcats' lead to 6-2.
The Camels threatened in the top of the sixth as Klingler drew a lead-off walk and was moved to second on a sacrifice by Forgacs, but Campbell was unable to further cut into the deficit.
Campbell will face Middle Tennesse on Sunday at 2:30 p.m. to complete the Georgia Classic.
