CHAPEL HILL, N.C. – Campbell split two matches against ACC opponents Sunday at the Carolina Duals, as it fell to North Carolina 26-19 but bounced back to defeat Duke 20-19. The Fighting Camels now stand at 7-8 overall.
In Campbell's first match of the day, a late-meet surge couldn't put the Camels over the Tar Heels.
At 125 pounds, freshman No. 27 Eric Montoya was pinned by No. 7 Nathan Kraisser. Campbell quickly answered, as redshirt junior Tanner Bidelspach pinned No. 19 Joey Ward in 3:53.
UNC won two in a row at 141 and 149 pounds, as No. 6 Evan Henderson posted a 13-4 major decision over freshman Michael Dahlstrom and Christian Barber blanked redshirt junior Brent Jorge 5-0.
Redshirt junior Nick Rex won an overtime battle over Chris Mears, earning a 6-4 decision at the 157-pound spot.
The Tar Heels came back to win three matches at 165, 14, and 184 pounds. At 165, John Staudenmayer won an 8-4 decision over sophomore Paul Duggan, UNC then posted two technical fall victories as Tanner Eitel defeated freshman Taylor McGiffen (174 pounds) in 4:00 and Alex Utley won in 7:00 over senior Matt Cox (184 pounds).
The Fighting Camels won the final two matches to cut the UNC lead to only seven. Senior John Merickel pinned Frank Abbondanza in 4:48 at 197 pounds. It was his fourth pin of the year.
In the heavyweight bout, sophomore Joe Nolan earned his first major decision victory of the year over David Woody, 9-1.

In Campbell's second meet of the day, it edged Duke by one point, earning its first victory over an ACC team this year.
Montoya picked up his 30th win of the year at 125 pounds as he posted an 11-3 major decision over Peter Terrezza.
Duke came back to win three matches in a row, as Brandon Gambucci pinned Bideslpach (133) in 2:46, Tanner Hough blanked Dahlstrom (141) 6-0, and Marcus Cain edged Jorge (149) 3-0.
At 157 pounds, Rex won his second overtime bout of the day, defeating Immanuel Kerr-Brown 6-4.
Next at 165 pounds, Duggan picked up an 11-2 major decision victory over Randy Roden.
The Fighting Camels and Blue Devils traded wins in the final four matches. At 174, Trey Adamson posted a 15-4 major decision over McGiffen.
James Cook notched his third pin of the year as he stuck Dylan Ryan in 4:17 at 184 pounds.
At 197 pounds, Merickel fell to Diego Bencomo 11-6.
Nolan clinched the team victory for the Camels at 285 pounds, as he defeated Brian Self 3-1 in an overtime decision.
