BUIES CREEK, N.C. – Campbell University senior guard Darren White has been named to the Capital One Academic All-America Men's Basketball Division I third team by the College Sports Information Directors of America (CoSIDA).
A native of Danville, Va., White owns a 3.66 grade-point average as an information technology and security major. Last year he earned a place on the Big South Conference presidential honor roll as well as a spot on the NABC Honors Court.
White was one of 15 players named to three Academica All-America teams among the 347 Division I members. Aaron Craft of Ohio State was named men's basketball Academic All-American of the Year. He was joined on the first team by Kelly Olynyk (Gonzaga), Mason Plumlee (Duke), Matthew Sullivan (Brown) and Cody Zeller (Indiana).
The second team included Ben Averkamp (Loyola Chicago), Matthew Dellavedova (Saint Mary's, Cal.), Nathan Healy (Appalachian State), Peyton Siva (Louisville) and Andrew Smith (Butler).
Joining White on the third team were Jordan Hulls (Indiana), Mike Muscala (Bucknell), Marc Trasolini (Santa Clara) and Mathias Ward (Montana).
Last month, White was named first-team Academic All-District 3 along with Healy, JP Kuhlman of Davidson, Dennis Ogbe of Tennessee Tech and Plumlee.
White was a first-team pre-season all-conference selection by Big South head coaches. He was also named Big South pre-season player of the year and pre-season Mid-Major All-America by CollegeSportsMadness.com.
He owned the seventh-highest scoring average (21.8) in nation on Jan. 5 when he suffered a knee injury late in the second half of Campbell's triple-overtime victory against Gardner-Webb. White has missed Campbell's last 13 games and is out indefinitely.
The lone Big South Conference men's basketball player to earn Academic All-America notice this season, White scored in double figures in all 11 games he has played, with 3 games of 30-plus points. He tallied 32 points (23 in the 2nd half when he made 10-of-11 field goals) with 11 rebounds and career-high tying 4 steals in a 72-60 win over UNC Wilmington on Dec. 29.
On Jan. 2, White netted a game-high 25 points, plus 10 rebounds for his 3rd double-double of the year with 5 assists and 3 steals in an 86-81 OT win at East Carolina
White produced a career-high and Gore Arena record 36 points (28 in the 2nd half) in a 101-82 win over Appalachian State on Nov. 16 when he made 15-of-19 from the floor
He scored 19 of his 22 points in the 2nd half at No.-20 Cincinnati Nov. 20 and scored 20 points at Iowa State Nov. 18. White was named Big South player of the week Nov. 19 after averaging 23.7 points, 8.3 rebounds, 3.0 assists and 2.0 steals in 3 games.
As a junior in 2011-12, White earned 2nd-team Big South all-conference honors after he ranked 5th among league scoring leaders (16.8), 4th in field goal percentage (.520) and 8th in blocks (1.06).
Campbell athletes have been named Academic All-American by CoSIDA 18 times since 1988, including two-time winners Denelle Hicks (softball / 1995, 1996), Brad Fritsch (golf / 1999, 2000) and Mike Priest (baseball / 2005, 2006)
White was the fifth Campbell student-athlete to gain academic all-district 3 notice during the 2012-13 school year. Colten Burris, Sam Eberwein and Kurt Odom were recognized on the academic all-district football team, while Ben Iiames earned the honor in men's soccer. At least one Campbell student-athlete has been chosen to the academic all-district team in each of the last 19 years.
CoSIDA's 1800 members in the United States and Canada nominate players for Capital One Academic All-America® recognition. To be eligible, a student-athlete must be at least a sophomore in academic standing, have at least a 3.30 cumulative grade-point average, and be a starter or key reserve on his or her team. CoSIDA members vote on the all-district teams; then a national panel selects the Academic All-America squads from all first-team all-district choices. District 3 includes all NCAA Division I schools in North Carolina, Tennessee and Virginia.
