CHARLESTON, S.C. – Charleston Southern knocked down 11 threes and defeated Campbell 86-68 Saturday at the CSU Field House.
Saah Nimley scored 20 points, including 4-of-7 triples, Arlon Harper added 17 points on 7-of-10 shooting, Mathiang Muo contributed 16 (4-7 threes) and Paul Gombwer added 10 (5-5 from the floor) for the Bucs (13-8, 8-2 Big South), who entered the game ranked fourth in the country making better than 9 treys per outing.
Marvelle Harris came off the bench to pace Campbell with 14 points and 8 rebounds. Trey Freeman added 13 points and 5 assists, and D.J. Mason matched his season high with 12 points for the Camels (10-15, 5-6), who dropped their fifth-straight outing after opening the conference season 5-1.
The Bucs outscored Campbell 25-6 over the last 9:13 of the first half and led 49-26 at the break. After being held to its lowest scoring total of the league campaign Wednesday in a 73-53 loss at Coastal Carolina, the Bucs erupted for 49 in the opening period.
Charleston Southern shot 55 percent in the first period, hit 5-of-12 threes, including a 30-footer by Harper at the buzzer, and outscored the Camels 32-6 in the paint, 11-2 off turnovers and 14-2 on 2nd chances in the first 20 minutes. Harper (16 points), Nimley (12) and Gombwer (10) combined to shoot 17-22 from the field before intermission.
Campbell shot just 37.9 percent (11-29) on the opening period.
Charleston Southern extended the lead to as many as 33 (66-33) with 14:01 to play before the Camel rallied. Red-shirt freshman Trae Bremer came off the bench to score a season-high 8 points on 4-of-4 shooting. Darian Hooker added 9, plus 6 assists.
CSU improved to 4-1 at home vs. the Big South by shooting 50.7 percent (34-67) from the field, 44 percent (11-25) from 3-point range. For the night, CSU finished with a 44-20 edge on points in the paint and a 20-5 advantage in second-chance points.
Campbell made 48.3 percent (28-58) of its shots, 6-of-13 (.462) threes, but was out-rebounded by a 40-26 margin.
The Camels return home Wednesday to face Liberty (7:00 p.m.).

- "Big" Trae Bremer scored his first career bucket at the 10:43 mark of the 2nd half. He also took a charge from Saah Nimley with 8:19 left.
- Campbell (North) and Charleston Southern (South) were the pre-season favorites to win the Big South's two divisions. However, the Camels have played their last 10 games without injured pre-season all-BSC pick Darren White (21.8 ppg).
